When Kim Kardashian Addressed Her Sex Tape on KUWTK: “I was horny”

Kim Kardashian has spoken up about her notorious sex video with Ray Jay, which she originally discussed in 2007 on Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ inaugural season.

The lead cast of Keeping Up With The Kardashians talked about many elements of the program in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times on June 3, 2021. In 2007, Kim Kardashian explained why she decided to address the sex tape issue on the show. Kim Kardashian stated in the interview that she would not have done it if it weren’t for the show, but she is pleased she addressed the issues rather than burying them.

Kourtney Kardashian assisted Kim in preparing for her appearance on The Tyra Banks Show during the show. Kim answered, “Because I was horny and felt like it,” when asked by her sister why she recorded the tape with rapper Ray J.

Kardashian, 40, said that if “KUWTK” hadn’t been, she probably wouldn’t have addressed the controversy publicly. Of course, the program was a hit, and the show’s 20-season run has been a source of pride for the creators.

She said, “I do think that, obviously, as producers, I’m sure they loved it. And loved [us] wanting to talk about the elephant in the room. And I probably wouldn’t have, unless it was for the show.”

Adding to this, she said “Sometimes I feel like, ‘OK, I know I should probably deal and get this over with. Someone’s gonna ask me, so I might as well just go ahead and do it’. In a way, filming has helped us deal with things, instead of sweeping them under the rug.” She even went on to say that at the end of the day, she was always open and honest and wanted to share whatever she was going through. “I wasn’t gonna hold back,” she said.

And, while the sex video was a significant event in Kim’s life and on the show, it was not the series’ motivation.

After 14 years on the air, the family announced in September that the 20th season of “KUWTK” would be the final one. In late 2021, Hulu will debut a new Kardashian imprint.

They filmed themselves back when Kim Kardashian was dating Ray J. Vivid Entertainment released a 41-minute film based on the tapes in March 2007. Kim Kardashian was 22 years old when the videos were made, but she addressed the issue in the first episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians in 2007.

“I think everyone’s like, ‘The sex tape made the show happen.’ It was so not about that at all,” Lisa Berger, who at the time was the executive vice president of original programming and series development at E!, added to the LA Times.

Executive producer Farnaz Farjam also told the newspaper, “I remember Kim being conflicted about it, because she hated everything that was going on around that tape. We all talked about, ‘We just have to own all the controversy around this family’ and jumped in with both feet in the first episode. Then, the audience can get to know them at a much deeper level than what’s been tabloid headlines.”

A former E! executive also shot down rumors that the family was given the show because of the valuable attention the home video had brought them.

Kim’s decision to address the footage immediately soon, according to Eliot Goldberg, senior vice president of production and development at Ryan Seacrest Productions, was “brilliant.”

Ryan Seacrest Productions’ senior vice president of production and development, Eliot Goldberg, produced the series.
