Tyler Perry almost killed himself, survived sexual abuse
“I feel like my childhood self perished,” acclaimed screenwriter, playwright, and filmmaker, Tyler Perry, revealed during a 2010 conversation with Oprah.
Tyler Perry endured an agonizing childhood. Born Emmitt Perry Jr., in New Orleans, to Willie Maxine Perry (née Campbell) and Emmitt Perry Sr., he experienced years of relentless physical abuse by his father.
“His solution to every problem was to beat it out of you,” Perry recalled about his father.
In a 2010 interview with Oprah, Perry shared that his father routinely assaulted him. One specific event that stood out was when his father lashed him with a vacuum cleaner cord.
“I still don’t understand why he did it,” Perry recalls.
Trending:
“He cornered me in a room and struck me with the vacuum cord repeatedly.
“There were welts all over [me], flesh coming off my bones.
“I had to wait for him to sleep.
“When he fell asleep, I escaped to my aunt’s house, who was horrified upon seeing my injuries.”
Perry’s entire childhood was marked by fear, never knowing what might trigger his father’s wrath.
To cope with the verbal and physical torment, Perry relied on his imagination to transport him to a better world.
He remembered a pleasant day at the park with his mother and aunt.
“Whenever someone did something terrible to me, I could mentally retreat to this park until the ordeal was over.”
However, Perry’s mind could only offer limited refuge. In addition to the physical abuse from his father, Perry experienced sexual abuse at the hands of four different adults.
Perry first encountered molestation around the age of five or six when a male neighbor inappropriately touched him.
“My body felt like it was betraying me because I experienced an erection so young.”
Perry later suffered sexual abuse by a male nurse and a man from his church. “My first sexual experience was this man performing oral sex on me as a child.”
At the age of 10, Perry was molested by a friend’s mother after she had an argument with her boyfriend.
She emerged wearing lingerie and hid the key inside herself. Despite feeling betrayed by his body when he experienced an erection, he retrieved the key.
She then pulled him on top of her.
The abuse became so unbearable that Perry attempted suicide by cutting his wrists, but he did not succeed. He tried once more in his late teens, but again, he was unsuccessful.
Now a prosperous actor, producer, screenwriter, playwright, and filmmaker, Perry recently received the People’s Champion award at the People’s Choice Awards.
During his acceptance speech, Perry recounted the time an engineer helped him dig a well at his Atlanta residence almost 20 years ago.
“We’re all digging wells in this world. We dig wells in our lives, in our relationships, investing time, effort, and energy, but sometimes it doesn’t yield what we need,” Perry expressed.
“We pour our dreams, time, and energy into our businesses, but they don’t always provide what we sought. However, if you just keep digging, please hear me, just keep digging.”
Perry advised the audience never to give up, as they might be closer to their dreams than they think.
He stressed that if he had quit when he was homeless shortly after turning 16, hungry, and living in his car, he wouldn’t be where he is now – providing opportunities for talented actors through his company, Tyler Perry Studios.
He concluded by reminding everyone that when they achieve their goals, “everyone you encounter will meet you at your worth.”
