Tom Holland Is Open To a Gay Spider-Man
Will Peter Parker come out as gay? Given his budding love with MJ (Zendaya), probably not, but it’s a notion actor Tom Holland would enthusiastically embrace. Holland claimed in a recent interview with The Sunday Times that he’d be open to his Marvel character coming out as homosexual, and that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to start being more inclusive on the LGBTQ front as soon as possible.
The demand for a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender superhero has surged, with Marvel CEO Kevin Feige recently promising to increase representation.
Last month, the executive told i09, “We haven’t been shy about saying that that’s coming and that there’s much more prominent LGBT heroes in the future. [It’s] coming soon.”
While the character of Spider-Man may not be gay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (at least not yet), Holland promised fans that a gay superhero is only a matter of time. “I can’t talk about the future of the character because honestly I don’t know and it’s out of my hands.”
“But I do know a lot about the future of Marvel, and they are going to be representing lots of different people in the next few years,” the 23-year-old actor said.

That diversity, according to Holland, is desperately required in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said, “The world isn’t as simple as a straight white guy.It doesn’t end there, and these films need to represent more than one type of person .” Even Spider-Man is conscious of his privilege as a white man.
Kevin Feige’s vow comes after Avengers: Endgame included the MCU’s first openly homosexual character, albeit a minor one. The revelation came early in the movie while Captain America, played by Chris Evans, conducts a support group for those left behind after Thanos wiped off half of the universe’s population early in the film.
In an interview with io9, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said of the LGBT character in Endgame, “That was never meant to be our first focused character. That was just meant to be a matter of fact and a matter of life and a matter of truth. And I liked it that our hero, Steve Rogers, doesn’t blink an eye at that fact,” he said. “It is just truth and is heartbreaking for his loss and for the life he’s trying to put back together. It was never meant to be looked at as our first hero. I guess it’s the first reference so it does, of course, get a lot of attention.”
Although Marvel fans were frustrated that this historic moment for one of the world’s major film franchises was downgraded to a short “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” scene, as Mashable called it, the moment was mostly welcomed with praise.
Marvel Studios intends to devote more resources and ingenuity to bringing heroes and villains from all walks of life into future chapters of its cinematic world, as the Spider-Man actor stated.
Last year, in an interview with The Playlist, Kevin Feige said that openly gay, lesbian, bi, or otherwise non-heterosexual heroes will join the MCU, adding that the characters will be both recognizable and new to fans.
Co-director Joe Russo, who did a Deadline interview before the film’s release to explain why it was so crucial for the film to include this brief LGBTQ moment, portrayed the character. Many people were questioning whether Russo was pandering or being real in his interview.
One persistent theory is that fans will see their promised LGBT hero in the upcoming film The Eternals, starring Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, and Kumail Nanjiani. Whether the rumors are accurate or not, a really historic LGBTQ moment in the MCU will undoubtedly occur soon.
