The unsolved murder of JonBenet Ramsey

The murder of JonBenet Ramsey remains one of the most puzzling and unresolved cases in recent history.

The six-year-old beauty pageant contestant was found dead in the basement of her Boulder, Colorado home on December 26, 1996.

Her parents, Patsy and John Ramsey, were the first to realize she was missing, and upon searching the house, Patsy discovered a ransom note demanding $118,000 for her safe return.

Despite a frantic search for JonBenet, her body was eventually discovered by her father in the basement of their home.

Her mouth was covered in duct tape, her wrist was bound with a cord, and her neck was strangled with a cord attached to a stick.

Her cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation due to strangulation, with an additional 8.5 inch fracture on her skull.

To this day, the question of who killed JonBenet remains unanswered, with no one officially charged with the crime.

There have been two main theories over the years: that the crime was committed by someone in the family or by an intruder.

Despite the fact that DNA evidence was found on JonBenet’s body and clothing, it has not yet been matched to any individual.

The first theory is that a family member was responsible for JonBenet’s death.

This theory is based on the fact that the ransom note asked for an amount close to John’s bonus from work, and was written with stationary found in the house.

However, none of the DNA evidence found on JonBenet matches any family members and they have not been charged with the crime.

The second theory is that an intruder broke into the house and committed the crime.

Evidence supporting this theory includes a footprint found next to JonBenet’s body that did not belong to a family member, a broken window in the basement, and DNA from drops of blood from an unknown person found on her underwear.

A documentary released in 2021, “JonBenet Ramsey: What Really Happened,” includes audio tapes from a detective Lou Smit, who worked closely on the case and believed the family was not responsible for JonBenet’s death.

There were also theories that JonBenet’s brother, Burke, was involved in her murder, but he was never officially named a suspect.

A CBS special in 2016 called “The Case of JonBenet Ramsey” implied that he was responsible for her death, but the outcome of the subsequent $750 million lawsuit for defamation is not publicly known.

Despite the numerous theories and speculation, the case of JonBenet’s death remains open, with her father continuing to push for answers and for an independent agency to test DNA in the case.

The case remains one of the most well-known unsolved mysteries in history.
