Thandie Newton shed tears before filming this rape scene
Thandie Newton has revealed that she broke down in tears after being asked about wearing “protective underwear” before shooting a rape scene in the 2004 film Crash.
In the movie, which controversially won Best Picture at the 2006 Oscars, Newton portrayed a woman who experiences sexual assault by a police officer, played by Matt Dillon.
The scene features Dillon’s character stopping Newton’s character and her husband before proceeding to assault her during a full body search.
According to Newton, the assault was not explicitly described in writer/director Paul Haggis’s script.
She initially assumed a reference to Dillon’s character “finger-f******” her character was intended as ironic.

While speaking to Vulture, Newton shared her surprise at Haggis’ interpretation of the encounter between her character and Dillon’s.
Newton recalled Haggis gathering her and Matt Dillon at the beginning of the night and asking, in front of Dillon, if she was wearing protective underwear.
Both men seemed uncomfortable, and Newton was confused.
Haggis explained he wanted the scene to be as realistic as possible, which made Newton realize what he was implying.
She didn’t make the connection to the earlier “finger-f***” reference until she saw the final film, which left her shocked.
Following the conversation, Newton retreated to her makeup trailer and cried.
She explained that it wasn’t the fact that she had to perform the scene, but rather the disbelief that such an event could occur in reality.
Newton worried about contributing to the portrayal of a racially charged, street-side sexual assault by a police officer, as she initially believed it couldn’t possibly be true.
Years later, Newton acknowledged the unfortunate prevalence of sexual abuse of black women by police officers, describing it as “a phenomenon.”
In the same interview, Newton discussed feeling frightened while working alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible II.
She characterized Cruise as a “dominant individual” who makes significant efforts to appear amiable.
