According to US media, prosecutors in New York have formed a grand jury that will deliberate whether or not to arrest former President Donald Trump.

The decision, which was revealed in the press on Tuesday night, is thought to imply that criminal charges might be brought against Trump Organization personnel, including Trump himself, during the grand jury’s six-month term.

According to the Washington Post, which cited two unnamed people “familiar with the development,” the panel will meet three days a week for six months.

Trump labeled the grand jury appointment “a continuation of the greatest witch hunt in American history” in a statement issued Tuesday evening.

“This is purely political, and an affront to the almost 75 million voters who supported me in the presidential election, and it’s being driven by highly partisan Democrat prosecutors,” Trump added.

“Our country is broken, our elections are rigged, corrupt, and stolen, our prosecutors are politicized, and I will just have to keep on fighting like I have been for the last five years.”

“It’s never stopped… No other president in history has had to put up with what I have had to,” Trump wrote.

According to the publication, the panel is also considering many items unconnected to Mr. Trump’s case.

According to the Washington Post, the action, which was also reported by ABC, implies that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance may have discovered proof of a crime, if not committed by Mr Trump, then by someone close to him.

The inquiry is being led by District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., and it is being coordinated with a state inquiry led by New York State Attorney General Letitia James, which is looking into potential tax evasion charges against the former president.

According to the publication, Vance’s team is investigating Trump’s business dealings before he became president. According to the Post, the investigation would look at whether the value of certain properties in the Trump Organization’s real estate portfolio was adjusted in a way that misled banks and insurance companies.

In the United States, prosecutors generally send major cases to grand juries, which are made up of individuals who evaluate the prosecution’s case in private. They hear evidence and can seek further documents before determining whether to file criminal charges.

The Manhattan district attorney’s inquiry was launched in response to accusations made by Trump’s former personal attorney and long-time bagman and fixer, Michael Cohen, who served a three-year jail sentence for his actions and is now a cooperating witness. Cohen is said to have given the hush money to the two women, pornographic actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy magazine centerfold Karen McDougal.

According to persons familiar with the situation, the district attorney is also looking into the salary given to top Trump Organization officials.

Investigators believe the Trump Organization intentionally inflated and devalued assets, including many properties in New York state, in order to get bank loans or lower taxes.

The Post reported, “The move indicates that District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr.’s investigation of the former president and his business has reached an advanced stage after more than two years. It suggests, too, that Vance thinks he has found evidence of a crime—if not by Trump, by someone potentially close to him or by his company.”

According to The New York Times, the attorney general’s office indicated last week that it was cooperating with Vance Jr.’s office in the inquiry. According to the publication, New York Attorney General Letitia James has been pursuing a civil investigation, which means the case might be resolved by a lawsuit or fines. Vance Jr. is carrying out a criminal probe.

Mr Vance, who is leaving at the end of December, obtained eight years of Mr Trump’s tax returns in February following a years-long court struggle that went all the way to the Supreme Court.

Both the president’s son Eric, a prominent employee at the Trump Organization, and the company’s longstanding chief financial officer, Alan Weisselberg, have testified under oath to the Vance inquiry.
