Sophie Turner ‘Angry’ Over her Game of Thrones rape scene

Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, is having a moment. Sophie is making news once again for her remarks regarding one of her most controversial scenes, following a completely unexpected engagement to Joe Jonas.

Sophie says that she was irritated by the uproar surrounding Sansa’s horrible rape in the aftermath of Harvey Weinstein’s sex scandal. Why? Because sexual assault is a common occurrence that should not be hidden.

Turner discussed the criticism the scene sparked among fans in a recent interview with Marie Claire US. She said:

‘I was happy people were talking about it. But I was angry they put all their effort into [debating] a television sexual assault when it happens around the world every day, and you barely hear of it.’

The scene sent shockwaves through the audience at the time it aired.

Turner, 21, has been playing Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones since 2011.

Sophie previously spoke to TIME about the outrage surrounding her character being sexually attacked, stating that while it was shocking to see, she hoped it would spark a larger conversation. “This was a fictional character, and I got to walk away from it unscathed,” she said. “Let’s take that discussion and that dialogue and use it to help people who are going through that in their everyday lives. Stop making it such a taboo, and make it a discussion.”

Sophie has always believed that sexual assault should not be avoided, particularly on television. “This sort of thing used to happen and it continues to happen now, and if we treat it as such a taboo and precious subject, then how are people going to have the strength to come out and feel comfortable saying that this has happened to them?”

As the Harvey Weinstein, 65, sexual assault and harassment scandal continues to rock Hollywood, Sophie’s remarks are more important than ever. Several celebs have spoken up about how Harvey allegedly sexually harassed and attacked them, including Sophie’s Game of Thrones co-star Lena Headey, 44.

Sansa’s rape, which was performed by her then-onscreen husband Ramsay Bolton, was allegedly used to fuel her desire for independence, according to Sophie.

However, many others interpreted it as simply another case of sexual assault utilized for entertainment purposes.

‘This was the trending topic on Twitter,’ Turner said to TIME, ‘and it makes you wonder, when it happens in real life, why isn’t it a trending topic every time?’

One fan tweeted at the time: “When Ramsay Bolton deflowered Sansa Stark it was a painful scene. No affection, no love & no romance. That was rape indeed #GameofThrones”.

Another said: “sansa stark survived manipulation, rape, and domestic violence. She has her own brand of bravery and strength.”

Sophie’s observation that we need to spend more time discussing these real-world topics with the same intensity as one GoT scene is important at a time when the film and television communities are wracked by sexual assault and harassment claims, and these conversations are further spreading out into society-at-large. But what about the improvements? These things can’t only happen on a fantasy television program; they have to happen in real life as well.

Sophie, who is engaged to Joe Jonas, 28, also expressed her displeasure with actress Rose McGowan, 44, who was silenced on Twitter after criticizing Harvey and Ben Affleck, 45, on Twitter. “@rosemcgowan should NOT have been silenced. Isn’t this what we are actively trying NOT to do? Let’s not silence the victims of abuse,” she said on Twitter. In the aftermath of Harvey’s demise, an increasing number of women have come out to tell their heartbreaking tales. The #MeToo social media campaign has also pushed women to speak up about the violence they’ve experienced.

Let this serve as a reminder to keep attentive and aware of these difficulties on a daily basis, since, as Turner pointed out, they occur on a daily basis.
