In the forthcoming sports thriller “King Richard,” Will Smith portrays the father of tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams.

The film is based on a real story of Richard, a ferociously driven father who uses unorthodox tactics to lead his daughters Venus and Serena from the slums of Compton, California, to the world tennis arena, where they continue to dominate.

In one scene, Smith’s character says, “This world ain’t never had no respect for Richard Williams, but they gon’ respect y’all.”

The movie will honor their origins and history while also demonstrating Williams’ unshakable faith in Venus and Serena.

Richard is shown teaching young Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena (Demi Singleton) some techniques on the tennis court in a full-length teaser.

“King Richard” will be released in cinemas and on HBO Max on November 19th. Venus and Serena Williams, as well as their sister Isha Price, executive produced the film.

The Williams sisters are played by Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton.

“This next step you have to take,” Williams, who is portrayed by Smith, says in the footage.

“You are not going to be just representing us, you are going to be representing every little black girl on Earth.”

The trailer shows critics telling him that his daughters’ prospects of dominating the sport are low, but Richard remains committed to the 78-page success plan he drafted before they were even conceived.

Midway through the trailer, Richard brings the young tennis talents to the notice of tennis instructor Paul Cohen (Tony Goldwyn), who formerly worked with John McEnroe.

As they go into the court, Cohen says, “So tell me your names again.”

The then unknown tennis players, aged 8 and 7, introduce themselves as “I’m Venus,” and “I’m Serena.”

The film also stars Aunjanue Ellis as the girls’ mother.

After watching Venus and Serena play, one coach tells Richard, “I think you might just have the next Michael Jordan.”

“Oh, no, brother, man. I’ve got me the next two,” the pleased father replies.

“This next step you about to take, you’re not going to be just representing you, you going to be representing every little Black girl on earth,” Richard tells his children in an emotional voiceover.

The film also stars Susie Abromeit, Dylan McDermott, Tony Goldwyn, and Jon Bernthal.

On Wednesday, Smith, a two-time Oscar nominee, posted the trailer for the film, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, on his Instagram page.

“One of the greatest honors as an actor is to be able to celebrate someone’s legacy while they’re still here creating it,” Smith, who played boxing legend Muhammad Ali in Michael Mann’s 2001 film “Ali,” said on Instagram.
