The Queen’s furious letter telling ‘Diana to divorce Charles’
Princess Diana’s butler, Paul Burrell, claims that the Queen sent her a letter telling her that she should divorce Prince Charles.
A royal courier appeared at Princess Diana’s home door only weeks after she gave her candid interview about the collapse of her marriage to Prince Charles.
The royal courier, according to Paul Burrell, delivered a letter written in the Queen’s handwriting and carrying the House of Windsor crest.
The Princess of Wales never sought a divorce, preferring instead to separate from her husband, and telling Bashir about her “deep, profound sadness” about their split.
The Queen’s letter, however, put any doubts to rest by instructing Diana how things should be done.

Paul said: “It is a myth that the Princess wanted a divorce. She never wanted a divorce, but just a separation.
“Princess Diana showed me a letter one day which was sent by The Queen. It was a letter that Royal crest of Windsor Castle.
“It was very obvious to make out that was from the Queen. It was in the Queen’s hand and her writing was shocking.
“It said: ‘I have consulted with the Archbishop of Canterbury also with the prime minister and, of course, with Charles, and we have decided that the best course for you is divorce’”.
Despite the fact that the couple had been separated for three years, they had not yet divorced.
Diana is reported to have said to Paul after reading the letter, “That’s rich! They get to decide whether I divorce!”
“After considering the present situation the Queen… gave them their view, supported by the Duke of Edinburgh, that an early divorce is desirable,” the Palace announced Charles and Diana’s divorce a few days later.
The Queen’s letter put an end to the Prince and Princess of Wales’ “fairytale” marriage, which had captivated millions across the globe since their extravagant wedding in St Paul’s Cathedral on July 29, 1981.
On August 28, 1996, 15 years after their extravagant wedding, the divorce was finalized with a “decree nisi.”
Diana was allegedly given a £17 million (AUD$ 33 million) lump payment and £350,000 (AUD$ 680,000) per year to operate her private office after the divorce.
Diana was also given permission to retain her Kensington Palace apartments, and Diana and Charles agreed to share custody of their boys.
Despite Diana’s protests, her title of Her Royal Highness was taken from her and she was renamed Diana, Princess of Wales.
Buckingham Palace was completely surprised by her sensational interview with veteran Panorama journalist Martin.
She referred to the prince’s camp as the “enemy” and said that the monarchy was in urgent need of modernization, causing the Royal Family much discomfort.
