The Queen and Prince Philip were cousins, here’s how
Prince Philip had royal ties even before he married then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947.
The Queen and Prince Philip are distant cousins since they are both descended from Queen Victoria.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were third cousins.
Philip is related to Victoria on his mother’s side, and The Queen through her father.
According to Reuters, Philip was born in 1921 on the Greek island of Corfu as Philippos Schleswig-Holstein Sonderburg-Glucksburg.

Princess Alice of Battenberg was Prince Philip’s mother, and Princess Victoria was her mother.
Princess Alice, Queen Victoria’s second daughter, was born in 1843 and married Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, with whom she had seven children.
Victoria was Alice’s first child, and she went on to marry Prince Louis of Battenberg.
Victoria gave birth to their first child, Princess Alice of Battenburg, who would later become Prince Philip’s mother.
The birth of Prince Philip’s mother Alice at Windsor Castle in 1885 was seen by Queen Victoria.
Prince Philip was the fifth child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg, who was of British ancestry, according to the British royal family’s website.
As a result, he is Queen Victoria’s great-great-grandson.
Prince Andrew, Philip’s father, was King Constantine I of Greece’s younger brother and King Christian IX of Denmark’s grandson. Philip was known as Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark because of his father’s Greek and Danish ancestors.
In 1947, when the Duke of Edinburgh married the Queen, he had to relinquish his Greek and Danish royal titles.
Queen Elizabeth II is a great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria via her father, King George VI.
In 1837, Queen Victoria was crowned, and three years later, she married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Queen Victoria had nine children with Prince Albert: four boys and five girls.
As a consequence, via King Christian IX of Denmark, the Queen and Prince Philip are also connected.
George VI, the Queen’s father, was the son of King George V, the son of Alexandra of Denmark.
Alexandra of Denmark was the daughter of Christian IX and married Edward VII, the son of Queen Victoria.
Through Christian IX of Denmark, they were second cousins once removed.
The immediate heir, Edward’s oldest son Albert, died during an influenza outbreak.
In 1910, the throne went to King George V, the Queen’s grandfather.
However, Edward abdicated in December 1936 after learning that as King, he would be unable to marry divorcee Wallis Simpson.
As a result, his younger brother, George VI, ascended to the throne.
Following his untimely death in 1952, his oldest daughter Elizabeth ascended to the throne.
