Princess Diana aspired to be a royal when she was a youngster, and she had a “childhood crush” on Prince Charles.

Diana Macfarlane says her cousin had her sights set on the future King of England while her classmates chose to adorn their boarding school chambers with pictures of singers.

Diana says in the show, reminiscing about their time at West Heath Boarding School, that “everyone loved to have their photograph on the bedside table. We all used to have various pictures of pop stars that we liked – The Monkees, Rod Stewart and people like that.”

“But I can tell you that she used to have photographs of Prince Charles around her bed at West Heath as a sort of childhood crush really… With Diana it was always pictures of Prince Charles. She had a schoolgirl crush on him for a very long time.”

“The dashing young man – absolutely. So she would have been 14 or 15.”

The prince had dated Diana’s sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and made an impact on her, according to Diana’s cousin.

Diana, who has never publicly talked about her cousin before, also reminisces about Princess Diana’s earlier years, describing her as a big ball of positive energy even back then.

The feature-length documentary, which commemorates the late Princess’s upcoming 60th birthday, chronicles her path from nursery aide to worldwide fame. “Told in the present tense, this definitive film draws on rare archive and new testimony to immerse viewers in the most iconic moments of the Princess’ life. The epic documentary goes behind the headlines to provide a vivid insight into the complex woman behind the media image.”

In another segment of the program, Diana’s friend Dr. James Colhurst said that he only found out about her relationship with Charles when she complained about the Royal Family’s expectations of the heir.

Years before she met Charles, James was the first to capture Diana performing a ‘royal wave.’

“I find that funny,” he confesses, gazing at the photo of Diana on a minibus. “She didn’t know then.”

The cousins were close friends and were both bridesmaids at Diana Macfarlane’s sister’s wedding.

She says: “She was full of life, great fun, loved a giggle, wicked sense of humour. We used to think that we could get away with something naughty by looking angelic afterwards.”

It comes amid speculation that Diana’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, will be able to put aside their differences in time for the presentation of a new monument of her in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Gardens on July 1.

“The Princes hope that the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on their mother’s life and her legacy,” Kensington Palace previously said.
