Prince William Takes New Job, Donates full Salary to Charity
Prince William has taken a full-time role as an Air Ambulance pilot and has pledged to give all of his earnings to charity.
According to an AFP story, the prince began his new job as an air ambulance pilot for East Anglian Air Ambulance, but he plans to donate his $62,000 annual salary to charity.
His role, for which he will begin training in the fall, will be located at Cambridge and Norwich airports, allowing him to be near to wife Kate Middleton and son Prince George when the renovations to their country home, Amner Hall, are finished.
The successor to the throne will serve with the East Anglian Air Ambulance service, bringing his experience in the Royal Air Force performing search-and-rescue operations to good use. William has made a commitment to work four days on, four days off in a shift schedule that will enable him to attend to his other responsibilities and see his family. In an interview with a news crew, Prince William stated:
William served in the military for three years as a search-and-rescue helicopter operator, and has since completed months of tests and preparation to transition to his current civilian role. He would work a nine-and-a-half-hour shift as part of a four-day-on, four-day-off rotation with his current job.

And, although the Duke of Cambridge will be paid by a civilian corporation (a first for a member of the Royal Family in direct line to the throne), he will not be receiving a monthly salary.
The Duke will be officially hired by Bond Air Services, as will all other East Anglian Air Ambulance pilots, according to the Palace. “He will draw a salary which he will donate in full to charity.”
And with this arrangement, William would have to juggle his career, royal responsibilities, and family obligations—a role he seems to relish.
He said in the report, “Doing a job like this really helps me to be grounded and that’s the core of what I’m trying to become.”
Prince William earned his Air Transport Pilot’s License (Helicopter) and will begin his job in spring 2015.
“The Duke will start as a co-pilot but, after a period of training, will be qualified to fly as a helicopter commander,” the Palace tells Us.
“This job will be the Duke’s primary occupation,” the announcement continued, “but his roster will take into account the duties and responsibilities he will continue to undertake on behalf of The Queen, both in the United Kingdom and overseas. The Duke will also continue his work with his patronages and with the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.”
