Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview gets Emmy Nomination
The names of Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry are on the Emmy ballot—technically.
The British Crown may not have approved of Oprah Winfrey’s explosive interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, but Emmy voters did. Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS PrimeTime Special, landed an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special.
Harry and Meghan talked of feeling abandoned by the British monarchy during the two-hour program, which aired in March.
Although neither Harry nor Meghan are individually nominated, Winfrey and the show’s producers (Tara Montgomery, Terry Wood, Brian Piotrowicz, Brad Pavone, and Lindsay Flader) are.
When the sit-down interview aired, it drew over 17 million viewers. It was then re-broadcast on CBS and shown in the United Kingdom.

For royal fans, it was a momentous day: Netflix’s The Crown and Disney+’s The Mandalorian tied for the most nominations (24 each!) for the 2021 Emmys. This season of The Crown, in particular, depicted a fictionalized version of Harry’s parents, Princess Diana and Prince Charles, meeting, marrying, and starting a family under the rigors of royal life. Both Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor were nominated for their roles as Diana and Charles in the lead actor – drama category.
The Sussexes discussed their decision to stand down from prominent royal positions, Harry’s difficult relationship with his family, and Meghan’s efforts to find support inside The Firm, as well as the discrimination she faced both within the palace and from the media. Meghan said that there were “several conversations” regarding her future child’s skin tone when she was pregnant with her firstborn, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, in one especially unsettling revelation.
“’He won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title, and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” she alleged a royal household member informed her and Harry of their baby.
Meghan also spoke about her mental health struggles at the palace and how she and Harry had to go on as if everything was OK during public appearances. “I share this because there are so many people who are afraid to voice that they need help,” she added. “And I know personally how hard it is to not just voice it, but when you voice it to be told no.”
In the hosted doc special category, Oprah with Meghan and Harry will compete against David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, W. Kamau Bell’s United Shades of America, and Showtime’s Vice.
This is Winfrey’s tenth Emmy nomination, having received nominations since 1989. In 2000, she won a trophy for the made-for-TV film Oprah Winfrey Presents: Tuesdays with Morrie, in 2002, she got the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, and in 2014, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony airs on CBS and Paramount+ on Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. ET.
Harry and Meghan, who had their second child, Lilibet Diana, last month, are currently based in California.
