Queen Elizabeth II has deprived Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their military titles and royal patronages for good.

The Duke of Sussex will lose his military titles, including the prized rank of Captain General of the Royal Marines, according to a statement released by Buckingham Palace.

Meghan and Harry would lose two patronages and their places as president and vice president of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, respectively.

The military, Commonwealth, and charitable associations that will revert to The Queen include:

  • The Royal Marines
  • RAF Honington
  • Royal Navy Small Ships and Diving.
  • The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust
  • The Rugby Football Union
  • The Rugby Football League
  • The Royal National Theatre
  • The Association of Commonwealth Universities.

The queen withheld the honors, with the palace stating that “it is not possible to proceed with the obligations and duties that come with a life of public service” as a result of her departure.

However, Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson responded to the media minutes later, saying, “Service is universal.”

The announcement comes after Queen Elizabeth II completed her 12-month assessment period a month ahead of time.

When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their retirement from the royal family last year, they committed to a one-year trial period that would end in March.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement today.

“Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.”

“The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family.”

“As evidenced by their work over the past year, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the U.K. and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organizations they have represented regardless of official role.” a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan said minutes later.
