Prince William and Kate Middleton returned to the place where they fell in love for a royal engagement on Wednesday.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s royal visit of Scotland is a gift that keeps on giving. And now, Prince William and Kate Middleton have returned to where it all started: St. Andrews, the college where the two met.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are visiting Fife as part of their royal tour, where they met as undergraduates in 2001. They went “land yachting” while there, which appears to include maneuvering a wheeled vehicle propelled by the wind. People writes that the couple raced for twenty minutes, and when Will became stuck in some wet sand, his wife yelled to him, “Come on, grandad!”

When they were done, “That was great fun,” he said. “I loved that I got a wheel off. That was awesome.”

The royal couple beamed and yelled as they raced on the beach in their land yachts, with Kate saying, “I’m catching you”

When they raced head-to-head across the rain-soaked and wind-lashed beach, it was William who emerged victorious.

“We were surprised as we expected the Duchess to win as she the more experienced sailor,” Guy McKenzie, who runs Blown Away with his twin Jamie, tells PEOPLE. “He got lucky – there was a gust of wind!” Jamie piped in: “He got blown away!”

Always competitive, he was keen to perfect his technique in order to achieve maximum speed. “I want to go faster. I need to make sure I’ve got the right angle ,” he informed the business’s owners.

“Wahoo!” he screamed as he drew away from Kate, who had made up ground at one point. “I’m catching you!” she shouted, laughing.

They looked to be on the verge of colliding at one point, but William swerved aside at the last second.

“They said they were delighted to be back at St. Andrews, and they were looking forward to going to the university later,” Guy McKenzie said of their visit.

Laura Warshauer, a former St. Andrews student, previously told People that the duke and duchess “definitely had chemistry,” back in the day.

“Whenever Kate was in the room, Will was obviously paying attention to her,” she explained. “When we’d be sitting at lunch in the dining hall and the two of them would be talking, it was amazing to see how natural it was, how they had so much to say to each other. Looking back, there were all these small moments—certainly moments where I was like, ‘Wow, this could really be something.'”

“When I first met Kate, I knew there was something very special about her. I knew there was possibly something that I wanted to explore there,” William recalled in their engagement interview. “We ended up being friends for a while, and that just sort of was a good foundation. Because I do generally believe now that being friends with one another is a massive advantage. And it just went from there.”

The visit is a high point of their mini-tour of Scotland, which began on Monday.

When their Kensington Palace office announced the trips earlier this month, they couldn’t help but remark that the couple would be taking a “trip down memory lane” with their return to the university.

When the pair was in university between 2001 and 2005, land yachting was not available on the beach. “They said they would have loved to have tried it then,” McKenzie continues. “They were recalling walking on the beach and the fact it was very, very windy.” “They joked about the Scottish weather,” his brother said.

The royals had spent the night in town after touring the Orkney Islands on Tuesday.

William and Kate visited to the college to help a group of young caregivers have a fun day out.

“They asked them about how COVID has affected them and how life has been during the pandemic for them,” Kirstie Howell, service manager for Fife Young Carers, told People.

“They were really engaging and relaxed with the young people. The young carers were shy at first, but I think once they had been out on the yachts they relaxed and had a great time. This has been a real treat for them.”

William and Kate have three children and recently marked their tenth wedding anniversary with a cute video of the family playing outdoors.

During another phase of her Scottish tour, Middleton experimented with DJ equipment, which her husband found comically unpleasant. Prince William also pondered on how important the nation is to him, owing in part to the fact that it was here that he discovered his mother, Princess Diana, had died.
