When their daughter is born this summer, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may name her Philippa in honor of Prince Philip.

On Valentine’s Day, the pair revealed they were expecting their second child, and a month later, they told Oprah that it would be a girl who would be born in the “summertime”

Following Prince Philip’s death last month, one name has emerged as the frontrunner in betting odds, according to UK gaming platform Ladbrokes.

“The support for baby Philippa is showing no signs of slowing down, and we’ve been forced to trim the odds again that it’s the name for Harry and Meghan’s daughter,” said Ladbrokes’ Jessica O’Reilly.

The British betting platform Ladbrokes “slashed the betting odds on the name to 3/1” according to People, adding that the younger generation of the royal family has a modern tradition of respecting the patriarch.

At 5/1 and 10/1, respectively, Diana (after Harry’s mother, the late Princess Diana) and Elizabeth (after Harry’s grandmother, the Queen) are still going strong.

Jessica remarked, “It certainly wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Diana is used, though it seems more likely it will be a middle name.

“Elizabeth is also proving a popular bet, with royalists thinking it could be an olive branch from the couple to Her Majesty.”

She continued, “Over the last few weeks the odds on baby Philippa have been backed heavily by royal punters which has forced the moniker into favouritism from 33/1. It would be an incredibly touching gesture for Harry and Meghan to call their firstborn daughter Philippa, and fans of the couple are seemingly convinced there will be a nod to Harry’s Mother and Grandparents somewhere in the little girl’s full name.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not be the first royal couple to pay homage to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall, Prince Philip’s granddaughters, both named their infant sons after him as a reference to their beloved grandfather.

Princess Eugenie and her partner, Jack Brooksbank, named their first child, a son born in February, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank. They married in October 2018.

Zara Tindall and her husband Mike welcomed a child, Lucas Philip Tindall, a month later.

When Meghan Markle, 39, and Prince Harry, 36, welcomed their first child in 2019, they called him Archie, a name that was not on the betting companies’ radar.

They announced the gender of their second child during an interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired in March.

“To have a boy then a girl — what more can you ask for?” Harry stated.

Meghan said at the Vax Live event in the United States: “My husband and I are thrilled to soon be welcoming a daughter.

“It’s a feeling of joy we share with millions of other families around the world.

“When we think of her, we think of all the young women and girls around the globe who must be given the ability and the support to lead us forward.”
