The Duchess of Cambridge is well-known for her athletic interests. The former field hockey player is not scared to participate in sports disciplines ranging from tennis to archery. The Sunday Times reports that the Duchess will take over as patron of the Rugby Football Union and Rugby Football League, a position previously held by Prince Harry.

Natalie Oliveri, a royal expert, appeared on Today Extra with presenter Belinda Russell to discuss the news.

Prince Harry relinquished numerous duties when he stood down as a senior member of the royal family. As a result, Kate Middleton will now fill in for him for a couple of them.

The Duke of Sussex, who was recently ridiculed in a US cartoon, is a passionate rugby lover who went to Japan in 2019 to witness England play South Africa in the World Cup Final.

If Kate is appointed to this patronage, she will be the first high-profile royal to take up one of the Prince’s old formal responsibilities. According to the Times, Queen Elizabeth is likely to reveal Kate’s new job in time for the Rugby Football League World Cup in October and November.

According to Oliveri Russell, this “could also encourage more women to get involved with the sport.”

She added: “Move over Harry, there is word Kate could take over two of his most loved patronages.
“What are they?”

Ms Oliveri replied: “That is right, the Duchess of Cambridge is set to take over as patron of the rugby football union and rugby football league.

“These are two roles that were previously held by Harry.

“He held them until February when the Queen stripped Meghan and Harry of their patronages because they confirmed they would not be returning to the UK as senior working royals.

“All those other roles are going to be distributed by some of Harry’s other family members.”

Some royal fans may be surprised by the announcement, especially considering Prince Harry has held the roles for the past five years.

However, you should know that the duchess is a longstanding rugby lover since she not only grew up watching the sport, but she has also attended numerous matches over the years with her husband, Prince William, who is the patron of the Welsh Rugby Union. Her other sporting commitments include royal patronage of the All England Lawn and Tennis Croquet Club, the Lawn Tennis Association, SportsAid, and the 1851 Trust.

Harry vowed in a video chat last year that he will return to England for the Rugby League World Cup, which begins in October.

Kate’s passion of sports was underlined by Ms. Russell.

She also explained why Kate would be an excellent choice for the rugby patronage in particular.

She said: “But Kate is set to take on these two roles with the rugby league organisations.

“It is set to happen from November, just before the Rugby world cup.

“Kate has long been a sports fan, she loves hockey, tennis and sailing.

“Even her sister Pippa spoke about how much the Middleton family used to love watching the rugby on weekends.

“They used to organize their day around the rugby matches.

“It is believed Kate’s link to the organizations will encourage more women to take part in rugby league.”

Pippa Middleton, Middleton’s sister, previously revealed their family’s love of rugby in an open letter to Vanity Fair. “Rugby was a big thing in our family, and the focal point was international matches,” she wrote. “We’d plan our weekends around the matches. If we lost, my dad would be in a state of despair for the rest of the afternoon, as if he’d actually lost the game himself.”

Kate is also said to be a supporter of the Rugby Football Union’s Inner Warrior initiative, which aims to assist teams attract female players.

The Times claimed that Princess Anne will become the next Captain General of the Royal Marines when the Palace relinquishes Prince Harry’s royal duties. Though the appointment has not yet been made public, if confirmed, she would be the first woman to hold that post.
