Kate Middleton Earned $6.81 An Hour doing ‘Back-Breaking Work’ Before College

Kate Middleton was simply a regular teenager performing horrible jobs for nearly no compensation before she became the Duchess of Cambridge—or even the girlfriend of a prince. Kate spent the summer before starting college at St. Andrew’s University (where she would meet Prince William and begin her fairytale love story) being a deckhand, and while the pay was just $6.81 per hour, it was “back-breaking work.”

The future royal worked for the Challengers at the Ocean Village Marina in Southampton, according to Marie Claire.

Kate was paid $75 every day for her efforts, and she worked from 7 a.m. until at least 6 p.m.

As quoted in Katie Nicholl’s book, Kate: the Future Queen:

“She took her meals on the boat and slept in a sparse and very small cabin in a bunk bed she shared with a fellow female deckhand….

“The boats were hired out by businesses eager to treat their clients to a day of luxurious hospitality… As well as washing the decks, Kate was expected to help load the 660-pound catering boxes on board and wash and pack away the sails at the end of the day.”

Cal Tomlinson, one of Middleton’s previous supervisors, informed Nicholl for the biography that Middleton was at the position for four months.

“It was back-breaking work, Kate mucked in and was very professional. She fitted right in, although she did stand out for being so pretty. She spoke well, she was very attractive, and she an air about her. She was competent and confident but very unassuming. She was polite and respectful to whoever was in charge of her and neat as a pin. She was never wore any makeup; she was naturally beautiful.”

And Kate’s most recent engagement? Assisting the Queen in the opening of a new wing of King’s College London. It sounds a little more opulent.

Kate has worked a variety of “regular” jobs. She worked as an assistant accessories buyer in November 2006, shortly after graduating from the University of St Andrews, according to Express. Fortunately, this job wasn’t as physically demanding as working at a marina. It was a part-time job that she reportedly attended to four times a week before reducing to three days each week.

Kate married Prince William on April 29, 2011. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have welcomed three lovely children since then. Kate Middleton gave birth to each of her children at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London, and the new family has been in the spotlight since their arrival.

According to the Mail on Sunday’s Royal Editor Emily Andrews, “Kate married William in spite of his position, not because of it. What she wanted out of the relationship, as far as we can ascertain, is a successful marriage and children to emulate what her parents had.” Nonetheless, the Duchess of Cambridge has discreetly established herself as a vital figure in the family business over the past decade, not simply as a mother to a “heir and two spares.” It hasn’t always been easy for the Cambridges, who have been chastised for their low number of public appearances. But, as they celebrate a decade of marriage with continuously high popularity ratings in the United Kingdom, it appears that their slow and deliberate approach is the key to their success.
