How Princess Diana Felt “Excluded” at Prince William’s Christening
Six-week-old Prince William was baptized in the music room at Buckingham Palace on August 4, 1982, and the day didn’t go off without a hitch, despite the picture-perfect moments captured on camera.
Princess Diana felt “excluded” at the baptism of her eldest son, Prince William, now the Duke of Cambridge.
She said that she was not engaged in the planning of the event.
William donned the Honiton white lace gown (originally commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1842) and posed for the official family picture, as with all royal christenings, but not every aspect followed tradition.
Prince William was born on June 21, 1982, and after his father, Prince Charles, became the second in line of succession.

Because the British monarchy’s supply from the River Jordan (where Jesus was baptized) was low at the time, tap water stored in the Lily Font was poured over the future king’s head during the baptism. And, according to Princess Diana, Will’s mother, it wasn’t the only blunder.
Following the baptism, members of the royal family gathered for photos, including Prince William’s grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, his parents, Princess Diana and Prince Charles, and his great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
In his book Diana: Her True Story–in Her Own Words, royal writer Andrew Morton claims that no one asked Diana how the occasion should be planned.
“Nobody asked me when it was suitable for William – 11 o’clock, couldn’t have been worse,” she said.
In archive pictures and videos, a clearly unhappy William spent almost the whole time crying in his mother’s arms.
Princess Diana was interviewed under the guise of secrecy for Andrew Morton’s breakthrough 1992 book, in which she talked frankly about her life as a member of the British royal family. They exchanged tapes via a mutual friend. She discussed her marriage to Prince Charles, her battle with an eating disorder, and the baptism of Prince William.
Diana stated that on her son’s special day, she felt ignored.
“Endless pictures of the Queen, Queen Mother, Charles and William. I was excluded totally that day,” she added.
“I felt desperate, because I had literally just given birth – William was only six weeks old.
“And it was all decided around me. Hence the ghastly pictures .”
“Everything was out of control, everything,” she said. “I wasn’t very well and I just blubbed my eyes out.”
Fortunately for Diana and the rest of the family, Harry’s baptism two years later was a lot more fun, owing to Will’s antics. Will initiated a game of tag with his cousin Zara Tindall after the ceremony, and he refused to sit in his assigned place for the picture call. Instead, he took center stage in front of the other royals, to their delight.
Princess Diana was adjusting to life as a princess at the time of the baptism, then she became a mother and had to learn a new way of life again.
