Emma Watson graduated from Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in English literature on Sunday, and she celebrated by tweeting a cap-and-gown picture to her fans.

The British actress best recognized for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films was among 2,000 graduates who received degrees from Brown University on Sunday.

Miss Watson’s high-security approach to her graduation ceremony contrasts sharply with her declared goal of enjoying a “normal” experience as a student at the prestigious US institution.

Watson enrolled in the Ivy League university in 2009. Along the way, she attended Oxford University in England and continued her film career.

In terms of her academic pursuits, the Harry Potter star has revealed that she was concerned about blending in with her peers. “On the first day, I walked into the canteen and everyone went completely silent and turned to look at me,” she told The Sunday Times in March. “I had to say to myself, ‘It’s okay, you can do this. You just have to take a deep breath and gather your courage.'”

During her time as a student, Watson had a busy film career, releasing both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, This is the End, and the current Biblical epic Noah.

In the past, the 24-year-old has downplayed her popularity, saying that she has never been approached for an autograph on campus — an indication, she claims, of her normalcy.

“I’ve never even been asked for an autograph on campus,” she told Us Weekly in 2013. “I threw a party for nearly 100 students and not a single person put a photo on Facebook.”

Watson’s significant presence in the Harry Potter series made it impossible for her to remain undetected. “I was in denial,” she said in a 2011 interview. “I wanted to pretend I wasn’t as famous as I was. I was trying to seek out normality, but I kind of have to accept who I am, the position I’m in and what happened.”

The guard wore a pink blouse, trousers, and sneakers underneath her graduation gown — considerably more practical, no doubt, than Miss Watson’s stiletto heels.

Watson chose Brown University for a variety of reasons. “I really like the fact that it has a very open curriculum, that there aren’t any requirements,” she told Rookie in 2013. “Really, I’ve kind of been in charge of my own education since I started out on Potter when I was 9 or 10, and I liked that I could design my own major if I wanted to, and I could take independent studies if I wanted to on subjects that weren’t necessarily in the curriculum.”

Miss Watson’s mother, Jacqueline Luesby, was also in attendance for her daughter’s graduation, which occurred after five years – and three enrollments – at university.
