Even before informing the Queen, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan told Elton John that they intended to leave the Firm.

A source told The Mirror that the famous singer was a “rock” for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as they pondered their future in the royal family, and spoke to them “every day” before they announced their decision to step down from senior roles. Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, was a personal friend of Sir Elton.

An insider said: “Elton speaks to Harry and Meghan every day. He’s an inspiration, an almost ‘motherly’ figure.

“They made their decision alone, but he’s a shoulder to lean on and listened as they spoke about their plans.

“He is a constant support, especially to Meghan, and is very protective of them both.

Another source, on the other hand, told The Post that although he was aware of the couple’s plans, their announcement still caught him off guard. John admires the pair for taking charge of their life. He really cares about them and their family, and he is always there for them. Megan and Harry made their choice without any other influence, according to the source, and solely had their future happiness and well-being in mind.

“Elton supports the fact Harry and Meghan are admirably taking control of their own lives,” a spokesperson for Sir Elton told the publication.

“He cares about them and their family deeply and is fully supportive of any decisions the couple make, knowing they are made by them alone, without outside influence and with their future happiness and wellbeing in mind.”

In 1997, Sir Elton reworked Candle in the Wind for Diana’s funeral. He attended Harry and Meghan’s wedding and subsequently defended the pair when they flew to his house in Nice, France, on his private aircraft.

The Rocketman singer, 72, revealed he supplied the luxury 12-seater Cessna aircraft, which would have cost over £20,000 to rent because of the couple’s “high level of much-needed protection.”

The previous week, the Sussexes had declared that they would no longer be performing any royal responsibilities in a statement posted on their verified Instagram account. Meghan is remaining in Canada with their son Archie while Harry is allegedly in the United Kingdom while they work out the details of their departure.

The Queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William, 37, were given 10 minutes warning before the button was pushed, which caught everyone off guard at Buckingham Palace.

As no other members of the Royal Family were contacted before the news was announced, the Queen was reported to be “disappointed” by Harry and Meghan’s announcement.

Harry’s News at Ten friend Tom Bradby claimed the pair were “driven out,” that family ties were “toxic,” and that they had been told they would not be part of a slimmed-down monarchy, to Palace officials fired back with a vehement denial.
