Earl Spencer believes Martin Bashir ‘planted listening device in Diana’s flat’ to gain her trust and secure 1995 Panorama interview
Earl Spencer believes Martin Bashir installed a bug in Diana, Princess of Wales’ Kensington Palace residence to earn her trust.
Princess Diana sat down with the former BBC journalist for her now-famous 1995 interview.
The princess, certain that she was the target of a dirty tricks operation, felt that the security services were listening in on her communications.
Author Sally Bedell Smith says she has audio of Charles Spencer claiming that he felt Bashir had installed a listening device in her Kensington flat.
Ms. Bedell recorded the revelation in notes she took while interviewing Earl Spencer for her Diana biography in 1998.

Diana herself suspected the security services had installed a bug in her flat and had specialists come in to check for listening devices.
According to The Times, Earl Spencer believed that a device had been installed in his sister’s flat by Bashir to persuade her that her suspicions were correct.
Lord Dyson’s report criticised Bashir’s use of forged papers to prey on Diana’s paranoia.
Charles, according to Sally, stated, “I don’t think anyone else urged her to do the interview. She was off on her own bat having had her various insecurities fed by Bashir very cleverly.
“I even heard from members of her staff that he would go into a radio with his anti-bugging team and produce a bug.”
Earl Spencer also stated that he felt Diana would have done the interview without anybody else’s urging – but only after Bashir had’very skilfully’ fed her ‘insecurities.’
Earl Spencer has now asked that Scotland Yard look into Martin Bashir’s interview.
The Met has acknowledged that any fresh information presented as a consequence of Lord Dyson’s inquiry will be “assessed.”
Diana was deeply concerned about her privacy and security during the mid-1990s.
Her phones, she suspected, had been tapped as part of an espionage effort against her.
Earl Spencer, according to Ms Bedell Smith, claimed his sister was “off on her own bat, having had her various insecurities fed by Bashir very cleverly.”
‘I even heard from members of her staff that he would go in with his anti-bugging team and go into a radio and produce a bug,’ he claimed.
The investigation determined that Martin Bashir earned Princess Diana’s trust by fabricating fake documents.
As a result, she began to suspect that the Royal Family and their employees were spying on her.
Indeed, it was proven that the BBC utilized trickery to get their historic interview with The Princess of Wales.
“Well, the irony is that I met Martin Bashir on the 31st of August 1995 – because exactly two years later she died, and I do draw a line between the two events,” Earl Spencer told BBC Panorama.
