Marvel star Dave Bautista has responded to Scarlett Johansson’s decision to sue Disney over the distribution of her film Black Widow on Disney+.

Bautista, who portrays Drax the Destroyer in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and featured in both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame” posted an article about ScarJo’s lawsuit in a tweet on Friday morning, writing, “Told em they should’ve made a #Drax movie but noooooo!”

Many speculated that he was siding with Disney rather than his Avengers: Endgame co-star, implying that if they had produced a movie with him instead, he would not have done such a thing.

It’s not the first time a spinoff starring Dave Bautista’s Drax has been suggested; there was even discussion of Pom Klementiff’s Mantis getting in on the action. The concept isn’t entirely novel, especially considering Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn endorses it.

The actor previously stated that he had campaigned for a solo film but did not believe it would ever materialize. “Even if it’s not me portraying Drax, I just think it is an interesting story to tell,” he previously told MTV UK.

Black Widow is one of several films that have had repeated delays as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak, but it is likely one of the most significant in terms of the expectations placed on the film. In some ways, it was a great success when it eventually arrived almost a year late, grossing the highest of any post-pandemic film, even if it wasn’t at the typical level that has come to be the bar for Marvel movies.

Johansson, who has portrayed Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow in nine Marvel films, alleges that her deal with Disney’s Marvel Entertainment was for a guaranteed exclusive movie theater release, with the majority of her pay based in significant part on the film’s box office performance.

Dave Bautista is familiar of Black Widow’s legal difficulties due to his work on Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune adaption. The film’s HBO Max premiere was part of a contentious battle between Warner Bros. and its production partner Legendary. But the situation was swiftly handled, with both parties departing happy.

When Johansson attempted to renegotiate her contract after the streaming decision was made, she was treated with radio silence, according to her account.

“Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel,” the actress’ representative said in a statement. Disney quickly rejected this allegation in a statement, saying, “There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”

Regardless of the present situation involving Black Widow and Disney’s streaming release plan, it’s reassuring to know that Dave Bautista can still make a joke, even if it comes from a very personal and very genuine place, according to sources. Meanwhile, Black Widow remains in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access. Black Widow has earned over $60 million from $30 first-weekend purchases and made $80 million at the box office since its debut on Disney Plus.

Meanwhile, Bautista’s tenure in the MCU is coming to an end as well. Earlier this week, when promoting his campaign with Disney+ for their streaming package, he told PEOPLE that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” will “be the end of my Drax journey.”
