Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Under Fire After Racist Reddit Comments Resurface

Simu Liu, the star of Marvel’s most recent box office hit, Shang-Chi And The Legend of the Ten Rings, has been a constant in the press since the film’s release earlier this month.

Fans have previously praised the actor for his supposedly down-to-earth demeanor and the running joke about his past job as a stock picture model.

Liu’s comments from 2013 to 2019 under the pseudonym /u/nippedinthebud have recently appeared online. Liu appeared to convey what some have seen as generally problematic opinions on a number of issues in them.

One post, for example, says, “I am all about the gender equality however girls are just not as good as boys at sports and whenever I play volleyball with a girl on the team I always get frustrated. Sometimes I say things .”

Another says, “From a biological standpoint [pedophilia] is no different than being gay – a small mutation in the genome that defines our sexual preferences…. What we currently know about the [pedophilia] disorder is this — like homosexuality, it exists on a spectrum,” a view which Liu claimed to have developed after researching the matter for a role.

A user who posted images of Simu Liu’s comments called the subreddit Men’s Right Asians, which Simu was a member of in 2015, a “racist incel subreddit”

The posts appear to have divided social media, with some claiming that many of the posts were taken out of context, either intentionally or inadvertently. Liu’s engagement in “incel subreddits” according to one user, was overstated.

“[/r/aznidentity] was not an incel subreddit in 2016. It as just a subreddit for Asians. Not Asian men – Asians period,” Lewis Parker, a Twitter user, explained.

The user went on to reveal that many of Liu’s comments on that subreddit came from the same thread about Kim’s Convenience, the Canadian comedy in which Liu had his breakthrough.

“Simu liu not only being anti black but also excusing ped0philia saying it’s the same as being gay…is really not surprising…he’s just a nasty spirited person like very evil,” one Twitter user opined.

Another person tweeted, “Wow! Simu Liu is f****** disgusting! I just read his Reddit post about his ‘sympathy’ towards pedophiles and I want to f****** vomit! Are we sure that’s his Reddit? Because if so then OH my god????”

Simu has yet to issue an official statement in response to his new scandal, but the actor did take to Twitter to retweet an old post in which he discusses making inappropriate statements out of hatred and fury. It appears to solve his present difficulties if you connect the dots.

He explained in a tweet that he only tries to promote positivity before writing, “DISCLAIMER: If you dig back far enough, I’m sure you’ll find a more immature version of me who gave in to anger and hate. It doesn’t make me a hypocrite; it makes me a human being. Mentalities evolve. We shift and we grow. And I want us all to grow the right way .”

It’s worth mentioning that this wasn’t written in response to any specific post. Simu Liu has not responded in any other way as of the time of writing.

The actor was previously chastised in China when a video of his 2017 interview went viral there. Simu shared his early recollections of living in communist China on CBC’s “What’s Your Story?” to mark Canada’s 150th anniversary, describing it as a third-world nation where people are supposedly dying of famine.
