Shailene Woodley Loves Her First-Ever Sex Scene: “It’s my favourite”

Shailene Woodley says her sex scene in The Spectacular Now is her favorite in the film.

The 21-year-old co-stars with Miles Teller in the coming-of-age drama that received the duo Special Jury Awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Teller stars as a charming high-school senior who is more concerned with the omnipresence of his flask than with his schoolwork or future in the James Ponsoldt picture, which was adapted from Tim Tharp’s heartbreaking novel by (500) Days of Summer screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. His destiny is slightly altered when he wakes up on the lawn of an unassuming classmate, Aimee (Woodley), who is more interested in science than in socializing, and drags her into his circle.

During an appearance on The View on July 24, Woodley said that she has no reservations about getting it on in the film. “It’s my favorite scene in the whole movie because it is so real,” she remarked.

Woodley did warn that the sequence would make some viewers squirm in their seats. “The audience does feel uncomfortable watching it because it almost feels like you’re invading somebody’s privacy,” the California native said. “There’s not fancy music playing and there’s not any exaggeration of what it’s like to be intimate with somebody for possibly the first time. It’s also just a minute-long shot of us making love.”

Woodley went on to laud the James Ponsoldt picture, calling it “the most authentic coming-of-age movie that we’ve had in maybe 20 years”

“It’s just such a real look at what adolescents are doing today, the way they interact with their parents and they way they interact with each other,” the actress remarked. “There’s no glamour. They’re not trying to make it something that’s it not.”

She went on to reveal that none of the cast used makeup on set, saying, “There’s zits. It’s so real!”

While none of her previous relationships reminded her of Sutter, Woodley claimed she can relate with her character’s arc. “I think there’s a process that a lot of young girls go through in high school where they kind of lose themselves in a relationship,” she explained. “I actually think it’s a really important part of life, because had I not gone through that, I wouldn’t have taken the time to get to know myself and get to know my own needs.”

The Spectacular Now will be released in theaters in the United States on August 2, with foreign release dates to be announced.
