Scarlett Johansson Hits Back at Reporter Who Asked If She Wore Underwear While Playing Black Widow

In 2012, the American superhero film Avengers, based on the Marvel Comics, was released. Scarlett Johansson portrayed a black widow in the film, while Jeremy Renner portrayed Hawkeye. When the actress sat down for an interview with a major newspaper to promote the picture at the time, she was asked if she wore panties beneath her costume in the movie.

The actress can be seen in the video sitting next to Jeremy Renner during an interview with Entertainment Daily, when the interviewer, Jerry Penacoli, asks her the weird question regarding her Black Widow suit.

The Extra journalist asked, “Now were you able to wear undergarments,” but Johansson cut him off. “You’re like the fifth person that’s asked me that. What is going on?” she said, frustrated.

“Since when do people start asking each other in interviews about their underwear?” Scarlett continued. When Penacoli attempted to explain that he was asking because she is dressed in a “skin-tight” costume in the movie, the actress interrupted him and said, “I’ll leave it up to your imagination. Whatever you feel like I should be wearing or not wearing under that costume.”

The Extra journalist attempted to backtrack as the interview became increasingly awkward, asking, “Is it inappropriate?”

Johansson couldn’t conceal her disbelief. She said, “To ask somebody what kind of underpants they’re wearing? What kind of interview is this?” The reporter then tried to utilize semantics to get out of the awkward direction the interview was heading, but the Marvel actress was plainly annoyed.

Meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in Marvel’s Black Widow, one of the most anticipated films of 2021. Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz all appear in the film. It’s also the start of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
