Ryan Seacrest Tries to High-Five Blind Contestant

We’ve all found ourselves awkwardly wondering what kind of body gesture was required to signify the end of a conversation at some point. It’s all so confusing: handshakes, fist bumps, bro hugs, air kisses…

However, when Ryan Seacrest attempted (and failed) to high-five a legally blind competitor on American Idol last night, we’re fairly sure he set the bar for all-time socially uncomfortable moments on the show.

Scott Macintrye, 23, is a “American Idol” competitor who plays the piano, went to college at the age of 14, and ballroom dances. He even sung his way to a golden ticket to Hollywood.

McIntyre, who can only see two degrees of tunnel vision ‘it’s kind of like looking through a straw’ was none the wiser when Seacrest instinctively tried to give the singer who had just successfully auditioned of the new series the greeting.

After singing Billy Joel’s And So It Goes, Cowell, who is known for his caustic tongue, said MacIntyre, who can also play classical piano, ‘you’re a cool guy.’

Paula Abdul, a fellow judge, praised him when his voice ‘goes to a softer tone,’ while new judge Kara DioGuardi, who debuted on the competition last night, described him as ‘courageous.’

Ryan raised his right hand for a high-five after Scott finished his tryout and hugged his family.

Seacrest ended up reaching down and taking Scott’s hand after his gesture hung midair.

To give Seacrest a fighting chance in this case, we need to look into the circumstances surrounding his attempt to high five a blind guy. Scott says, “I’m pumped,” to which his loved ones erupt in exuberant applause. There’s an aura of fun in the air, and everyone is in high spirits. They’re all gleefully applauding and whooping. They’re really proud of Scott, as they should be. Ryan is enjoying himself, clapping and laughing, and even responding to Scott’s admission of being “pumped” with the phrase “As you should be.” Ryan Seacrest is fully immersed in the occasion and shares Scott’s excitement. Everyone seemed to be having a great time.

After assessing the scenario, Ryan Seacrest decided to initiate a high five with a blind guy. Even if he was establishing eye contact with Ryan during their talk, he couldn’t have seen much, and he definitely didn’t have the peripheral vision to notice a high five-instigating arm approaching him.

Scott is completely clueless to what is going on. He’s peering through a straw, so he’s just getting a glimpse of Ryan Seacrest’s stunning smile. He doesn’t expect a skilled and experienced television host to attempt a high five with him; it would be like attempting to play fetch with a butternut squash. Scott has progressed to the next round of American Idol. His dreams are about to be realized. He is a fully helpless victim in this situation. Seacrest is either trying out a very unique and perhaps offensive type of physical comedy, or he suffers a sudden gap in concentration.
