Ryan Reynolds reacts to Gerard Butler’s diss about Free Guy
Ryan Reynolds quickly responded to Gerard Butler’s harsh remark about Free Guy with his own rebuttal.
Butler was asked about the similarities between the Reynolds film, about a man trapped in an open-world video game, and his 2009 flop Gamer, about a virtual reality first-person shooter game in which players control real-life death row inmates, in a recent interview with Unilad promoting his new film Copshop.
“I actually don’t know what Free Guy is,” Butler said. After learning about Reynolds’ new project from his Copshop co-star Alexis Louder, he said: “Oh shit, is it… I don’t watch Ryan Reynolds movies.”
On Tuesday, the Free Guy star responded to Butler’s big disclosure.
“Can you believe Gerard Butler doesn’t know what Free Guy is?” Reynolds sarcastically captioned an Instagram photo that included a screenshot of a People story on Butler’s statements, as well as a tweet from Reynolds about supporting the ACLU and the NAACP.

Ryan, on the other hand, didn’t want to make it all about him. Instead, he focused on his and Blake’s recent vow to match donations to the ACLU and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. “Also, can you believe that the challenges to democracy have never been greater, and that Blake and I will match your contributions to the @aclu nationwide and @naacp ldf? *Order of these questions optimized for the Internet, NOT importance,” he said.

Reynolds highlighted a screenshot of his own tweet announcing his and Lively’s relationship with the two organizations beneath the image of Butler’s jab.
Reynolds subsequently announced on Twitter that, through Oct. 8, he will match all donations up to $1 million made to the NCAAP’s Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the ACLU.
Meanwhile, Reynolds revealed last month that Disney had commissioned a sequel to Free Guy. “Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #irony,” Reynolds tweeted. “If it isn’t called, “Albuquerque Boiled Turkey” we’ve failed.”
