‘Rust’ armorer was ‘new to job’ and worried she ‘wasn’t ready’: ‘I was really nervous’

Last month, the head gun handler for the film “Rust,” on whose set Alec Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on Thursday, expressed concern about her inadequate experience for her first position as a head armorer.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the daughter of stuntman and Hollywood armorer Thell Reed, said on the Voices Of The West podcast that she wasn’t convinced she was “ready” for the post of head armorer on The Old Way, which was her first time on set.

“Rust” was just Gutierrez-Reed’s second film as a head armorer, she stated on the show.

She said of working on The Old Way: ‘It was a really bada** way to start off a really long and cool career, I’m hoping. I just finished up working on The Old Way with Nicolas Cage, his very first Western.

“I was really nervous about it at first,” she said. “I almost didn’t take the job because I wasn’t sure if I was ready but doing it, it went really smoothly.”

Gutierrez-Reed went on to say that she was originally apprehensive about loading blanks. “I think loading blanks was the scariest thing to me because I was like, oh, I don’t know anything about it,” she explained. However, she said that her well-known father assisted her in her training.

She continued: ‘He took me from being completely green and taught me everything I know so far and by all means, I am still learning.

‘Dad has taught me everything but a lot of things I just kind of caught on by myself through observation, watching him do things or just knowing how the firearms work.

‘I think loading blanks was the scariest thing to me because I was like “oh I don’t know anything about it.”

‘But he taught me that and eventually by the time I was trying to figure out how to make a specific blank go when you want it to rather than it hitting the empty cylinders and everything, I figured that out on my own.’

Gutierrez, according to court filings, took a shell casing from the revolver after the deadly shot and handed the weapon over to police when they arrived. The number of shots fired was unknown.

Baldwin killed Hutchins, 42, “Rust’s” director of photography, and wounded director Joel Souza.

Alec had been handed a gun by an assistant director, and according to court filings, he was informed it was safe and a “cold gun,” meaning it wasn’t loaded.

Following the incident, authorities stated they interrogated an armorer as a witness, according to Insider.

In most cases, a weapons master or armorer is in charge of all weapons used on set. This might range from picking the appropriate materials for a specific historical era to maintaining the weapons on site and ensuring that they are utilized safely and professionally by actors and stunt people.
