Rose McGowan Says Harvey Weinstein Raped Her

Rose McGowan has claimed that Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced film producer, raped her.

The actor had previously spoken about her rape experience and claimed that her assailant was a studio executive, but on Thursday she informed The Hollywood Reporter that Weinstein was the man in question. McGowan’s confirmation came after she launched a series of tweets criticizing Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and claiming she told Amazon management about her incident with Weinstein.

“1) @jeffbezos I told the head of your studio that HW raped me. Over & over I said it. He said it hadn’t been proven. I said I was the proof,” reads the first tweet.

“I had already sold a script I wrote to your studio, it was in development. When I heard a Weinstein bailout was in the works I forcefully begged studio head to do the right thing. I was ignored,” she continued. “Deal was done. Amazon won a dirty Oscar.”

She went on to explain that she received word from Amazon that her “show was dead” after communicating with her attorney about obtaining her script back. She went on to tell Bezos that he should “be the change you want to see in the world. Stand with truth.”

“Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein,” Weinstein’s spokesperson Sallie Hofmeister told THR in reaction to the charges.

Following a series of exposes in the New York Times and The New Yorker that showed several women accusing Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault, McGowan has been a vociferous critic of the former studio head and Hollywood culture.

McGowan and Weinstein had struck a $100,000 settlement following an encounter in a hotel room during the Sundance Film Festival in 1997, according to the New York Times.

The 44-year-old actress first refused to comment on the incident (some suggested she remained silent because her settlement may have included a non-disclosure agreement), but that didn’t stop her from mentioning the 2016 incident.

McGowan sent a series of tweets in October 2016 as part of a social media campaign called “Why Women Don’t Report.” “A (female) criminal attorney said I’d never win against the studio head because I’d done a sex scene in a film. #WhyWomenDontReport,” one of the tweets said. She followed with, “because it’s been an open secret in Hollywood/Media & they shamed me while adulating my rapist. #WhyWomenDontReport.”

McGowan has publicly chastised Weinstein’s fans and filed a petition to disband The Weinstein Company’s board of directors in the last week. She’s made so much noise on Twitter that some believe her account was briefly suspended on Thursday as a result of her numerous claims. (Her account was suspended by Twitter when she posted someone’s phone number.)

On Tuesday, the actress began a petition to dissolve TWC and slammed a number of individuals, including Ben Affleck, whom she urged to “f— off” in a tweet that has yet to be deleted.

“We’re reviewing our options for the projects we have with The Weinstein Co,” an Amazon representative said in a statement.
