Rick Moranis Comes Out of Retirement 24 Years after Hollywood Exit

Thanks to Ryan Reynolds, actor Rick Moranis is returning to the screen sooner than planned following a 20-year absence.

Rick Moranis was a popular actor in the 1980s and 1990s, appearing in films such as Ghostbusters, Spaceballs, Little Shop of Horrors, The Flintstones, and, of course, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Despite this, in 1997, at the height of his stardom, the humorous actor took a hiatus from acting to focus on his family, one that developed into a 20-year absence from filmmaking. Today, the ’80s icon is poised to return to the limelight, with a unique new job on the horizon.

Moranis’ last live-action film, alongside Tom Arnold, was released in 1996. Big Bully, a film about a writer (Moranis) who returns to his hometown and is challenged by a childhood bully (Arnold), was a colossal disappointment. At the same time, a young Canadian actor called Ryan Reynolds was breaking through on television, with guest appearances on shows like The X-Files, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and The John Laroquette Show. A lot has changed in the last 24 years. With the superhero blockbuster franchise Deadpool, Reynolds made good on years of near-success. Moranis, on the other hand, has mostly withdrawn from the spotlight. Save for a cameo in Brother Bear as a voice actor.

Moranis struggled to balance parenting and acting when his wife, Hollywood costume designer Ann Belsky, died of breast cancer in 1991.

“I pulled out of making movies in about ’96 or ’97. I’m a single parent, and I just found that it was too difficult to manage raising my kids and doing the traveling involved in making movies. So I took a little bit of a break. And the little bit of a break turned into a longer break, and then I found that I really didn’t miss it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “In the last few years I’ve been offered a number of parts in movies, and I’ve just turned them down,” he added.

Reynolds stunned the world by resurrecting Moranis in a Mint Mobile commercial. Reynolds said just before Moranis appeared on screen:

“…So to introduce it, we brought in an actor we’ve all gone too long without.”

Rick announced his comeback to the big screen with a new Disney picture, but no one expected him to appear with Reynolds in a Mint Mobile promo.

Under the premise of promoting Mint Mobile’s unlimited plan, the Deadpool star coaxes Moranis out of his acting sabbatical in the brief commercial. “It’s hard to believe that Mint Mobile has gone so long without an unlimited plan, so we’ve brought in an actor that we’ve all gone too long without,” Reynolds says as he stands in a field of potted mint plants.

“So, what do you want me to do? You want me to say something about Mint?” Moranis inquires, perplexed. “I’ve really got to get a phone.” Reynolds acknowledges that he doesn’t actually want assistance with the commercial—and he’s only invited Moranis to see him since he’s a “huge fan.”

Moranis fought back against the notion that he had retired, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2015 that he had taken a sabbatical to raise his children, and that he had no interest in cashing in on Hollywood’s nostalgia industrial complex. “I’m interested in anything that I would find interesting. I still get the occasional query about a film or television role and as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it,” he stated at the time. But the Ghostbusters reboot, directed by Paul Feig and starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, “didn’t appeal to me,” he said.

“I hope it’s terrific. But it just makes no sense to me,” Moranis remarked of the movie, which featured appearances by Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, among other original cast members. “Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago?” (Director Jason Reitman is bringing a new Ghostbusters sequel to cinemas next year, with a clear connection to the original movie that prominently featured Moranis; Moranis is not scheduled to appear.)
