Nicole, who is married to musician Keith Urban, 53, says she would have liked another six children in an interview with the magazine.
‘I wish I’d had more children but I wasn’t given that choice,’ she said.
‘But that’s okay. I get to mother other children. I have six nieces and nephews and I’m godmother to 12. I love mothering. I love kids and what they say.’
‘They’re quirky, funny, unfiltered. And then you get to see them grow and send them on their way.’ Meeting her husband, country music icon Keith Urban, was the most defining experience of the previous quarter-century, and she admits it was “an absolute miracle” they discovered one other. “Two Aussies born in the same year, but living in different worlds and cities, how did that happen? It was meant to be.”
Nicole can look back on a career that includes over 60 film and television productions, one Oscar, five Golden Globes, and two Emmy Awards – and counting. “I’m shocked and astounded, but also incredibly proud and grateful because I know what it means to get here,” she says of her meteoric rise as a producer and actress. “Everything is hard-earned; none of it’s handed on a platter. Not for me, nor my husband. Keith always says that every brick in this house is a gig. We never forget that.”
Sunday, 13, and Faith, 10, are Nicole and Keith’s two kids.
Bella and Connor, her kids from her marriage to Tom Cruise are now grown up.
Nicole and Tom married in 1990, after meeting on the set of Days of Thunder the previous year.
Tom cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their divorce in 2001.
The duo is similarly devoted to uncovering local talent, with Keith returning to The Voice’s judging panel after a nine-year absence and Nicole aggressively supporting young Australian female filmmakers and writers via her firm Blossom Films. Nicole, who championed Asher Keddie for the role of Heather in Nine Perfect Strangers when American investors hesitated to fund “an unknown,” adds, “When you get to this point in your career, it becomes your greatest joy. Part of my mission is to give chances to creatives, women especially, who haven’t really had the opportunity; it’s my greatest thrill.”
