Molly Ringwald Reveals She Was Sexually Harassed at 13 Years Old: ‘I Have Had Plenty of Harveys of My Own’

Actress Molly Ringwald has opened up about her experiences with sexual harassment and assault in a piece for The New Yorker.

While she wasn’t sexually harassed by Harvey Weinstein, she claims to have been harassed by “other Harveys” throughout her career.

Ringwald sued Weinstein and his brother for lost wages while working on the movie Strike It Rich, and she never worked with them again.

Ringwald wrote about her experiences of sexual harassment and assault from a young age.

“When I was 13, a 50-year-old crew member told me that he would teach me to dance, and then proceeded to push against me with an erection. When I was fourteen, a married film director stuck his tongue in my mouth on set,” she shared.

Despite having very protective parents who tried to shield her, “at every turn some older guy tried to help speed up the process” of her becoming a sexually viable young woman.

She also recalled an audition in her twenties where she was asked to let the lead actor put a dog collar around her neck.

“The actor was a friend of mine, and I looked in his eyes with panic,” Ringwald wrote.

After sobbing in the parking lot, she called her agent to tell him what happened, but he laughed and said, “Well, I guess that’s one for the memoirs. . . .”

She fired him and moved to Paris not long after.

Ringwald expressed her concern about how women’s stories of harassment and assault are often not taken seriously.

“Women are shamed, told they are uptight, nasty, bitter, can’t take a joke, are too sensitive. And the men? Well, if they’re lucky, they might get elected President,” she wrote.

The actress also talked about the hope that Hollywood will enact real change to make the industry safer for women.

“I hope that young women will one day no longer feel that they have to work twice as hard for less money and recognition, backward and in heels,” Ringwald said.

“It’s time. Women have resounded their cri de coeur. Listen.”

Ringwald’s revelations come in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, which has resulted in numerous women coming forward with stories of sexual harassment and assault.

Weinstein was convicted of rape and sexual assault in February 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in prison.

In her piece, Ringwald also revealed that she was warned about Weinstein before working with him on Strike It Rich.

She was 20 years old at the time and ultimately sued him and his brother for lost wages.

“While my own Harvey story may be different, I have had plenty of Harveys of my own over the years, enough to feel a sickening shock of recognition,” she wrote.

Ringwald acknowledged that speaking out about her experiences is difficult but necessary. “I could go on about other instances in which I have felt demeaned or exploited, but I fear it would get very repetitive.

Then again, that’s part of the point,” she said. “I never talked about these things publicly because, as a woman, it has always felt like I may as well have been talking about the weather.

Stories like these have never been taken seriously.”

Ringwald’s piece highlights the ongoing need for women to speak out about their experiences of sexual harassment and assault.

She hopes that her story will help bring about change in Hollywood and beyond.
