Leonardo DiCaprio is building a luxury eco-resort on His Private Island

On an island off the coast of Belize in Central America, actor Leonardo DiCaprio plans to develop an eco-friendly resort.

He and a partner paid $1.75 million to acquire the 104-acre Blackadore Caye nearly ten years ago, and he recently teamed up with NYC-based Delos developer Paul Scialla to build the premium resort, which is set to open in 2018.

The actor and environmental activist discussed the project with the New York Times, which will be dubbed “Blackadore Caye, a Restorative Island.” The word “restorative” in the title refers not just to the resort’s therapeutic services for visitors, but also to the island itself, which “suffered from overfishing, an eroding coastline, and the deforestation of its mangrove trees,” according to the New York Times. “We don’t want to just do less harm or even have zero impact, but to actually help heal the island, to make it better than before,” says Paul Scialla, CEO of Delos.

“We are pushing each other the whole way to test the boundaries of what is possible,” adds DiCaprio. “With the onset of climate change, there are huge challenges, so we want the structure to not only enhance and improve the environment, but to be a model for the future. That includes restoring the island, creating conservation areas where we can hold research conferences, and regenerating the entire ecosystem to bring it back to its original form and beyond.”

The eco-resort will be built as a massive arc-shaped platform in the sea that will also serve as a protective cover for fish shelters and artificial reefs beneath it. A nursery is being established on the island to cultivate native marine grasses, and plans are in the works to eradicate invasive plant species so that the area can be reforested with native mangroves. These will be transplanted throughout the island in order to create a manatee conservation area, and a team of scientists, designers, and engineers will oversee the entire endeavor. They will monitor the resort’s influence on the island’s surroundings, together with the landscape architects appointed to rehabilitate the island.

The resort will have restrictions regulating what visitors can and cannot bring to the island, which is a 15-minute boat journey from San Pedro, as part of its goal to rehabilitate the ecosystem. The New York Times reports that “plastic water bottles, for example, will not be allowed on the island.”

“My goal was always the fact that I wanted to create something not just environmental, but restorativ,” DiCaprio told the newspaper. “A showcase for what is possible.”

DiCaprio stated, “The main focus is to do something that will change the world,” “I couldn’t have gone to Belize and built on an island and done something like this, if it weren’t for the idea that it could be ground-breaking in the environmental movement.”

On this island, there will undoubtedly be a combination of environmental care and luxury living: in addition to the guest villas, there will be a handful of private luxury houses for sale across the Caye, with prices ranging from $5 million to $15 million.

And if Leonardo DiCaprio’s version of The Island Of Dr. Moreau ever gets off the ground, he’ll have the ideal setting.
