Lady Gaga reflects on her Controversial Meat Dress

Lady Gaga, who was known for her dramatic fashion makeovers and bold choices at the time, attended the MTV Video Music Awards in 2010 wearing the “meat dress,” as it was dubbed by fans.

In a recent video for British Vogue, the House of Gucci actress takes us back to the red carpet appearance from over a decade ago. Gaga pondered on the controversial dress made by Franc Fernandez as she described her “life in looks,” detailing how it came to be and how she feels about it now.

Gaga claimed that her makeup artist was the inspiration for the look. “”It’s actually Val Garland’s idea. Val Garland the makeup artist. Her and I worked together for a long time and she shared a story with me where she had gone to a party wearing sausages and I thought this was quite funny and I said, ‘Well that’s a great way to make sure that everybody leaves you alone at a party’,'” she recounted.”

While it was enjoyable to wear, the singer also understood she wanted to make a political statement at the VMAs by protesting the repeal of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which obliged LGBT military personnel to hide their sexuality.

“We decided to do the meat dress because I thought to myself if we were willing to die for your country, what does it matter how you identify,” she explained.

Gaga went on to say that the meat wasn’t just flung over her; it was a well crafted piece.

“This was ultimately designed by Franc Fernandez, but it was the brainchild of House of Gaga, and we were backstage with Brandon Maxwell, who was working as one of my stylists at the time. He was vegan also and still helping to sew all of these last bits of meat to me and making my meat hat and my meat purse, which was held by Cher. It smelled like meat,” she revealed.

She went on to say, “There’s a corset under this, but the corset was a sewn to the meat, so this is actually a garment. They didn’t just drape meat over me and cross their fingers.

The Shallows singer said that the garment is still “thrilling to wear” after more than a decade.

The music artist also stated that she had no intention of making an animal rights statement.

Gaga told Ellen DeGeneres, “It’s certainly no disrespect to anyone that’s vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I’m the most judgment-free human being on the Earth. It has many interpretations, but for me this evening it’s [saying], ‘If we don’t stand up for what we believe in, if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.'”
