Johnny Depp admits he tortured Leonardo DiCaprio at 19

Johnny Depp, who was a popular actor in Hollywood before the Amber Heard drama, had earned the status of a superstar.

Filmmakers were vying to work with him, especially after the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

However, there was a time when he worked with Leonardo DiCaprio and confessed to torturing him.

Johnny and Leo worked together in the film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993.

At the time, Johnny was in his early 30s, while Leo was 19 years old.

Johnny made his young co-star go through a tough time on the set.

During a conversation with Cosmopolitan, Johnny Depp confessed that he was going through a hard time while filming What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.

Owing to the same, he would often treat Leonardo DiCaprio in a bad manner.

Johnny Depp said, “It was a hard time for me, that film, for some reason.

“I don’t know why. I tortured him. I really did.

“He was always talking about these video games, you know? I told you it was kind of a dark period.

“I was like ‘No, I will not give you a drag of my cigarette while you hide from your mother again, Leo.”

However, Johnny Depp soon expressed his respect for Leonardo DiCaprio.

“I’d say the absolute truth is that I respect Leo a lot.

“He worked really hard on that film and spent a lot of time researching.

“He came to set, and he was ready to work hard, and all his ducks were in a row.”

The film, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, was critically and commercially acclaimed and earned a lot of recognition for Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Despite their tumultuous past, Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio still have a positive relationship.

In 2016, they were spotted together at the premiere of the documentary Before the Flood, which DiCaprio produced.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape was a turning point for both Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio’s careers.

Johnny had already established himself as an actor with hits like Edward Scissorhands and Benny & Joon, but it was this film that showcased his dramatic range.

For Leonardo, it was his first big role in a major motion picture.

The film was directed by Lasse Hallström and also starred Juliette Lewis and Darlene Cates.

The story follows a young man named Gilbert Grape, who struggles to take care of his obese mother and mentally disabled brother while also dealing with his own personal problems.

Johnny Depp’s confession about his behavior towards Leonardo DiCaprio is not the only time he has spoken about his troubled past.

In a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone, he opened up about his battles with alcohol and drugs and how they affected his personal and professional life.
