Jessica Chastain agreed to nude scenes as long as co-star Oscar Isaac did the same

Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac are promoting new HBO drama series Scenes From a Marriage together, and they’ve already had a viral red carpet moment showcasing their electrifying chemistry. They appeared on The View on Friday to address some of the other notable moments from the show that have been discussed online, such as full frontal nudity.

The Golden Globe-winning actress stated on Friday that her one requirement for shooting nude sequences for HBO’s upcoming limited series “Scenes from a Marriage” was that her co-star and close friend Oscar Isaac do the same.

The actors of Zero Dark Thirty and Ex Machina were emotionally and physically vulnerable with each other in the limited series, frequently crying and yelling as they portrayed an unhappy married couple. While both actors’ performances were lauded online, it appears that Oscar’s decision to go entirely naked impressed people the most.

“I said to Hagai [Levi], who wrote and directed the series – in the very beginning, I said, ‘I’m comfortable with all the nudity, but any part of my body that you show, you’re going to have to show the same with Oscar,’” Chastain said during an appearance with Isaac on Friday.

“So, like, there’s a shower scene that I have in episode two, and you see my body. And so now, like, you see his body,” she added. “So for me, though, I wanted it to be balanced.”

The five-part miniseries, which reexamines old gender stereotypes through the eyes of a modern American couple, premiered on HBO on September 12, 2021.

During an interview with the onscreen couple, The View’s Sonny Hostin brought up the nudity, telling Oscar, “I hate to do it, but I have to ask… Twitter, we were talking about it—were you surprised at that reaction? Was there ever a moment where you second-guessed your decision to reveal yourself?”

Oscar stated that he was “fine” with the nudity at first, but after seeing the tape, he was astonished to see that it is “there for everyone” to see.

“You get sent the stuff to look at, to be like, ‘OK, I’m fine with that,’” Isaac said. “But I saw it on a laptop, quite dark, and I didn’t notice what was happening down there. And so it was a surprise when I started seeing all these things of, like, ‘It’s full-frontal.’ I was like, ‘No, what are you talking about?’ And I saw it, and clear as day on the big TV there, it’s there for everyone.”

He didn’t realize his naked moment had made it into the final cut of the show until the episode aired.

Oscar remarked before Sonny’s question that he felt “objectified,” while Jessica was getting all the “deep questions.” But he took the host’s questions in stride, joking, “You’re welcome, Twitter.”

Chastain has spoken about nudity in bits and pieces previously telling Vulture in 2018, “For me, I’m uncomfortable with nudity when it feels like it’s not the person’s decision to be naked, when it’s something that has been put upon them. In a way, I see that as like a victimization.”

She continued: “It trains an audience that exploiting someone in their body should be normal for nudity, when I think the opposite. When people are completely in control of their decisions, that is a really exciting thing. I love the human form – male nudity, female nudity, I’m all about it. I had to get to that place where, for me, it was my decision.”

The concert, which earned “generally favorable reviews” from review aggregation site metacritic.com, sparked a lot of interest on social media for reasons unrelated to the couple’s “next-level” red-carpet chemistry or their “master class performances.”

Scenes From a Marriage is now available on HBO Max.

Insider commended the pair’s chemistry and devotion to their characters in a review of the program, but said it is “irresponsible” and “vilifies women.”
