Jennifer Love Hewitt Recalls Being Asked ‘Gross’ Questions About Her Breasts as a teenager

Jennifer Love Hewitt revealed in a recent Q&A that when she was a teenager, journalists asked her “gross things” about her body.

Speaking with Vulture, Hewitt said she reflected on her own experience with interviewers after watching the documentary “Framing Britney Spears,” which follows Spears’s life while she is under a court-ordered conservatorship and touches on her treatment by fellow celebrities and media outlets.

Hewitt told the publication, “There’s that whole section in [the documentary] talking about her breasts,” referring to a distressing rediscovered interview with Spears when she was 17 years old. “At the time that I was going through it, and interviewers were asking what now would be incredibly inappropriate, gross things, it didn’t feel that way. I mean, I was in barely any clothing [in Heartbreakers]. For some reason, in my brain, I was able to just go: OK, well, I guess they wouldn’t be asking if it was inappropriate.”

When the romantic comedy was released in 2001, Craig Kilborn of the “Late Late Show” approached Hewitt about a fan-made website that evaluated her breasts in various ensembles.

“It’s very trippy, it’s really weird,” Hewitt, then 23, remarked of the site, to which Kilborn replied, “I believe that [men] are somewhat fascinated by a woman’s chest,” adding, “There’s motorboat time.”

Hewitt, who has a 7-year-old daughter, told Vulture that she shrugged off similar comments at the time, but that being a mother has changed her view on her prior experiences.

“I definitely look back on it and go, ‘ew,’” Hewitt said, adding that she recalls the focus being placed on her body after the release of the 1997 horror film, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

That being said, the star says hindsight is 20/20 and she understands why she was so annoyed by interviewer’s questions. She recalls, “At a press junket for I Know or I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, I remember purposely wearing a T-shirt that said ‘Silicone Free’ on it because I was so annoyed, and I knew something about boobs was gonna be the first question out of [reporters’] mouths.”

During press conferences for her 2001 picture “Heartbreakers,” which also starred Sigourney Weaver, Hewitt said she faced similar intrusive questioning.

“I was really tired of [the body] conversation. With Heartbreakers, that was a big part of it. I was disappointed that it was all about body stuff, because I had really worked hard in that movie to do a good job as an actress,” she recalle

“I remember one specific moment wishing that the acting had overshadowed all that — that for five minutes, they had said I was really great in the movie versus made a body comment.” Jennifer now wishes she “had known how inappropriate that was” so she could have defended herself or avoided such queries altogether. “I laughed it off a lot of the time,” she said, “and I wish maybe I hadn’t.”

However, the actor expressed her gratitude that, in part due of the Spears documentary, the dialogue around women in movies – as well as misogyny in the media – is improving.

“When I watched that Britney Spears documentary, it hurt my heart a little bit, because I remember in hindsight having that feeling,” she explained. “I’m really grateful that we’re in a time where, hopefully, that narrative is going to change for young girls who are coming up now, and they won’t have to have those conversations.”
