Jennifer Lawrence tells ‘sexist’ dress critics to ‘get a grip’: ‘I am extremely offended’

Jennifer Lawrence is slamming critics who chastised her for wearing a revealing Versace gown to a recent photo call while her male co-stars wore scarves and jackets. The Red Sparrow actress responded to the “controversy” on Facebook this morning, defending her decision to wear the beautiful gown.

Lawrence expressed her displeasure with the comments, calling it “sexist” and that she’s “extremely offended.”

“Wow. I don’t really know where to get started on this ‘”Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold’ controversy. This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended,” Lawrence wrote.

“Get a grip people,” she wrote. “Everything you see me wear is my choice. And if I want to be cold THAT’S MY CHOICE TOO!”

Lawrence had visited London on Tuesday to promote the new picture.  She posed for photos outside at a photocall with her male co-stars Francis Lawrence, Matthias Schoenaerts, Joel Edgerton, and Jeremy Irons, who were all dressed in coats.

“That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice.”

The dress inspired headlines such as “Jennifer Lawrence’s Dress Prompts Debate Over Sexism in Hollywood Amid #TimesUp.”

News organizations and social media users debated whether her choice of a Versace dress with a plunging neckline and thigh-high slit was acceptable for the chilly London weather.

Lawrence did not say to whom she was referring, but the photograph was panned by others, including British journalist Helen Lewis, who described it as “quietly depressing.”

“This is such a quietly depressing (and revealing) image. Not least because I’ve been outside today and it’s bloody FREEZING,” she wrote. “True equality means either Jennifer Lawrence getting a coat, or Jeremy Irons having to pose for a photocall in a—less chaps.”

Lawrence, a vocal feminist, also stressed that a woman’s choice of clothing is her own. She went on to say, “This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism. Over-reacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward. It’s creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a grip people.

Jezebel implored, “Please give Jennifer Lawrence a dang coat.” “I’ve seen your beautiful suits and coats. Why don’t you respect Ms Lawrence enough to dress her appropriately for the weather?,” one Twitter user said in response to the Versace account’s photo of her in the velvet gown.

Alexandra Frean, a British journalist, said, “At least the guys look really embarrassed.”

“Jennifer Lawrence Shivers in PLUNGING Dress with Gaping Thigh-Split That Looks Just Like Elizabeth Hurley’s Iconic Versace Gown,” said the headline in Mirror. “Why Is Jennifer Lawrence Nearly Naked on a Rooftop in the Freezing Cold?” questioned The Daily Wire.

Many critics assumed Lawrence did not choose the dress herself, claiming that it was a symbol of Hollywood’s continuing gender discrimination. For example, Jezebel opened its piece by criticizing her stylists: “If you’re looking at a woman and she is appropriately protected from the ravages of wind and rain, will you forget how hot she is? Yes. Thank you, J. Law’s stylists, for respecting this truth.

Lawrence is a strong supporter of the Time’s Up movement, which works to eradicate sexual harassment, and has participated in several marches, including last month’s Women’s March in Los Angeles.
