Jared Leto received a fan’s severed ear in the mail: PHOTO
Jared Leto, the actor and singer, received a severed ear from a crazy fan, which he now wears around his neck like jewelry.
The frontman of 30 Seconds to Mars, 41, told Xfm’s Phil Clifton that the strangest present he’s ever received was a severed ear. “Someone cut their ear off once and sent it to me, that was very strange. A whole ear. The Van Gogh move,” he stated. “The note just said, are you listening? I never knew who it was, who’s missing their ear out there. I poked a hole in it and wore it as a necklace!”
“Just don’t put your entire body in a case and send it to us,” he joked.
Then, on Monday night, Leto shared a photo of the real ear on Instagram with the caption “ARE YOU LISTENING?”
“The fans are an incredibly committed and passionate group of people,” Leto, 41, said of The Echelon. “Going to a show is kind of like visiting Japan, you expect gifts on your arrival. You get all kinds of wonderful things.”

Leto is far from the only star to receive unusual gifts from followers. Avril Lavigne was supposedly sent a dead rabbit by a fan and another used to mail Gwyneth Paltrow pizza. Norman Reedus, of The Walking Dead, once received a breast implant in the mail. The actor told E!online, “I guess she had it removed and sent it. It’s my phone cradle in my trailer on set!”
Reedus’ passionate fans bring this narrative full circle, since his character Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead previously constructed a necklace out of zombie ears.
Leto can joke about the ear, but he should consider himself fortunate because fellow actor Clive Mantle wasn’t laughing when he was handed a chunk of his own ear after being attacked outside his hotel room on March 22.
Thirty Seconds to Mars, Leto’s band, has announced the release of their fourth studio album, Love Lust Faith + Dreams, on May 21 through Virgin Records.
