Janet Jackson’s Life and Career

Janet Damita  Jo Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana, on May 16, 1966. She was the youngest of Joe and Katherine Jackson’s nine children and was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness. “We had nothing that truly brought us together as a family… Thanksgiving, Easter dinner, we never had that,” she recalls. “We didn’t grow up celebrating birthdays or celebrating Christmas, because of the religion.”

She co-starred in “The Jacksons” alongside her brothers and the rest of the family while on tour and making appearances. She landed the role of Penny Gordon on “Good Times” in 1977. That early on demonstrated her acting talents. She also played Charlene Dupree on the hit TV program “Diff’rent Strokes” for a few episodes. Her part on “Fame” followed soon after.

The American singer-songwriter, actor, and dancer has become a world icon after releasing a succession of musically innovative, socially aware, and sexually daring songs. Jackson is one of the most acclaimed musicians in the world because to her successful career, which began in 1973. Her extensive career in music and impressive list of accomplishments have impacted and reshaped popular music.

She signed with A&M Records at the age of 16 and released her debut album while still under her father’s strict control.

Two years later, she released “Dream Street” which a flop. A year later, she enlisted the help of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to create her third album, “Control” It was a smash hit in the United States, selling 5 million copies and generating six singles, including the #1 “When I Think of You” She then sacked her father, her manager, in order to take full control.

Jackson has sold more than 100 million records in her long music career, which spans 11 studio albums and eight world tours, with two of her albums making the ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine’s ‘500 Greatest Albums’ list. The albums were also featured in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s ‘Definitive 200’ list.

She has established herself as a key role model for music fans and lovers all around the country. Jackson has snatched the spotlight for her artistic pursuits in cinema as well as music. Her tremendous international success has elevated her to the status of one of the greatest artists and performers of our time. Her influence and impact have inspired millions of people all around the world.

Janet launched the massively successful album All For You in 2001, and she found herself both successful and unattached. “All this is really new for me,” she said.

“I’ve never dated. In my family, we grew up Jehovah’s Witnesses, so you’re not supposed to date until you’re thinking of marriage. I got married when I was 18, and then I got an annulment, and then Rene came into my life. So here I am and I know nothing about the whole dating thing…”

Janet was dead set on repeating the experience. “Rhythm Nation 1814” was then recorded. It sold 9 million copies in the United States this time, making it a greater smash than “Control”! She fell in love with René Elizondo, Jr., a dancer from one of her sister’s, LaToya Jackson’s, music videos, and secretly married him in March 1991. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame the following year.

Janet began working on her fifth studio album, simply titled “Janet.” It was her most successful album to date, selling over 10 million copies in the United States alone, and included her biggest hit song, “That’s The Way Love Goes” Two years later, she released “Design of a Decade” a Greatest Hits album that contained two new singles, “Runaway” and “Twenty-Foreplay.” Her eighth album, “The Velvet Rope” cemented her place in mainstream culture.

The legendary actor’s working life, on the other hand, was far from drama-free. Janet made international news when, during the Superbowl halftime show in February 2004, a notorious “wardrobe malfunction” resulted in the singer exposing herself in front of an estimated 100 million people.
