“It’s also a film I cherish”: Martin Scorsese Gushed Over Tom Cruise’s $162M Erotic Thriller That Nearly Made Him Leave Scientology

Tom Cruise is not only popular among movie enthusiasts but also has some of the most respected personalities in Hollywood talking about him.

Martin Scorsese, the legendary director behind Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, is a big fan of the Top Gun star.

Scorsese has expressed his appreciation for Tom Cruise and his movies on multiple occasions.

He even went as far as to say that Eyes Wide Shut, the erotic thriller that nearly separated Cruise from Scientology, is widely misunderstood due to its controversial nature.

Eyes Wide Shut follows Tom Cruise’s character, Dr. William Harford, as he is introduced to a secret underground cult and embarks on a bizarre s**ual adventure.

The movie was criticized for its portrayal of n^dty and highly s**ually explicit scenes, but it still went on to become the highest-grossing project by Stanley Kubrick.

When speaking about his admiration for Kubrick, Scorsese stated that he is a big fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Eyes Wide Shut is a profound film about love, s**, and trust in a marriage.

Scorsese believes that Eyes Wide Shut presents some unpleasant truths and that it’s not to be taken literally.

He describes it as Manhattan as you’d experience it in a dream, where everything feels familiar but very strange.

Despite earning good numbers when it was first released, the response to Eyes Wide Shut was extremely mixed.

One of the greatest films of the 1990s was misunderstood and criticized by both critics and audiences at the time of its release.

Interestingly, Eyes Wide Shut also has another famous controversy linked to its history.

The movie nearly separated Tom Cruise from Scientology.

Eyes Wide Shut isolated the stars from the world in a closed set in London, and the organization didn’t like it at all.

The movie which holds a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous film shoot of 400 days disassociated Scientology from its most notable devotee.

According to former senior Scientology executive Mike Rinder in his book, A Billion Years: My Escape From a Life in the Highest Ranks of Scientology, this detachment caused great trouble to David Miscavige, the head of the Church of Scientology.

The organization believed that Nicole Kidman, Cruise’s ex-wife, caused Cruise to distance himself from Scientology.

This led to their divorce in 2001 with Cruise returning to his image as the face of Scientology.

Marty Rathbun, another former Scientology executive, even investigated Cruise closely and went to the extent of tapping Kidman’s phone.

Despite all the controversies surrounding Eyes Wide Shut, Martin Scorsese still cherishes the movie.

He considers it a film that puts you in the authoritative hands of an old master, with a style that flies in the face of every modern convention.

It’s a profound film about love, s**, and trust in a marriage, and it’s a movie that he loves.
