How Snoop Dogg’s Famous Nickname came about

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., better known as Snoop Dogg, was born in Long Beach, California in 1971. But how did he get his well-known moniker?

Because of his appearance, his parents dubbed him “Snoopy.”

“He had a lot of hair on his head as a baby and looked like a little dog,” Snoop Dogg’s father, Vernell Varnado, stated.

The Snoopy name was inspired by the cartoon Peanuts, which aired on television and in comic strips. Snoopy is the dog of the main character Charlie Brown. Snoop Dogg used to watch so much Peanuts as a youngster in the 1970s that his mother claims he began to look like the character Snoopy.

“My momma gave me the name,” he says. ” I used to love Peanuts and Charlie Brown — Snoopy was my favorite cartoon character growing up. I watched so much, I started to look like him,” Snoop revealed.

When he started his rap career with Death Row Records, he added “Doggy Dogg.”

This moniker stayed with him as he made an appearance on Dr. Dre’s iconic album “The Chronic.” Snoop retained this moniker until 1998, when he was compelled to alter it after his departure from Death Row Records to join Master P’s No Limit Records. He subsequently changed his name to “Snoop Dogg,” which he had until 2013, when he temporarily changed his name to “Snoop Lion,” before reverting to “Snoop Dogg,” which he has kept since 2015.
