How ‘Dirty Dancing’ Star Jennifer Grey Prepared for Her s** Scene With Patrick Swayze
Actress Jennifer Grey, who starred in the 1987 hit film Dirty Dancing, has revealed how she prepared for her s** scene with co-star Patrick Swayze.
Grey, who played Baby Houseman, and Swayze, who played Johnny Castle, had undeniable chemistry on screen, but offscreen the two did not have the same connection.
In her autobiography, Out of the Corner, Grey says that she was initially apprehensive about Swayze being cast as her leading man for Dirty Dancing.
Grey and Swayze had previously worked together on the 1984 film Red Dawn, and according to Grey, Swayze was too much of a prankster and didn’t appear to take his work seriously.
However, casting directors believed that Swayze’s dance background, good looks, and acting ability made him the best person for the role.

Grey later regretted not accepting her co-star and admits that she wishes she could apologize to Swayze for being judgmental.
Grey says she was concerned about the s** scene because she wasn’t attracted to Swayze in real life.
She knew she needed to be convincing for the sake of the movie, so she wanted to find a way to “take her power back” and “feel more in control” of the situation.
Despite feeling “powerless” during the filming of the s** scene, Grey decided to make the experience about her needs.
Instead of letting the scene be about an act happening to her, she was going to focus on her pleasure and her needs.
“This scene wasn’t happening to me; it was happening for me,” says Grey in her book.
For new actors seeking advice on filming a s** scene, Grey tells them to “just turn yourself on” and encourages them to put themselves in a position of power.
She says her plan was to put herself “in the catbird seat” and make the scene “hot” for herself.
Grey says it was her responsibility to make the most of her time during that scene and to get something meaningful out of the experience.
During the s** scene, Grey says Swayze became an “asset” and she took over to become the star of that moment.
She says that their scene went so well that Swayze playfully asked her to marry him, to which she responded, “definitely.” Grey’s advice to new actors is to take control of their experience and make the scene about their own needs.
Grey’s candid admission about how she prepared for the s** scene has given insight into the world of film and what actors go through in order to make a scene look authentic.
It also highlights the importance of chemistry between co-stars on and off screen.
