French actor Gerard Depardieu charged with rape again
French actor Gerard Depardieu has been charged with rape and sexual assault, according to a statement from the Paris prosecutor’s office.
The charges come after a 2018 investigation into the allegations was revived. Depardieu was not detained when he was given preliminary charges on December 16, 2020.
The allegations against Depardieu date back to 2018, when an actress in her 20s claimed that the actor had assaulted her at his home in Paris on August 7 and 13 of that year. The two had reportedly met when Depardieu led a master class at her school.
The actress first filed a complaint with details of the alleged rape and assault in August 2018 in the southern French city of Aix-en-Provence.
The investigation was subsequently taken over by Paris investigators, but was soon dropped due to lack of evidence.

However, the case was later reopened and the charges against Depardieu were issued.
Depardieu’s lawyer, Hervé Temime, has stated that the actor “absolutely denies any rape, any sexual assault, any crime.”
It is unclear at this time what evidence led to the revival of the case and the issuance of the charges.
Depardieu is a well-known figure in the French film industry, having appeared in over 200 films over the course of his career.
He has received numerous accolades for his work, including a César Award for Best Actor for his role in 1990’s “Cyrano de Bergerac” and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in 2012’s “Life of Pi.”
The news of the charges against Depardieu has shocked many in the French entertainment industry, with some expressing disbelief and others offering support.
It is not yet known how the charges will impact Depardieu’s career, but it is likely that they will have some effect.
Rape and sexual assault are serious crimes with severe penalties under French law. If found guilty, Depardieu could face a prison sentence and be required to register as a s-x offender.
However, it is important to remember that at this time, the charges against Depardieu are merely allegations and he is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The case against Depardieu is still ongoing and it is not clear when the actor will appear in court. In the meantime, he is free on bail and is allowed to continue working and living his daily life. It is not known if he will face any additional legal consequences as the case progresses.
The allegations against Depardieu and the subsequent charges have sparked a wider conversation about sexual assault and harassment in the French entertainment industry.
Some have called for greater support for survivors of such crimes and for stricter consequences for those found guilty.
Others have emphasized the need for due process and the importance of protecting the rights of the accused.
The charges against Gerard Depardieu have sent shockwaves through the French entertainment world and have raised important questions about the handling of sexual assault cases.
