Frank Sinatra’s attempted suicide twice because of Ava Gardner, book reveals

A tell-all book about legendary singer Frank Sinatra claims that his tumultuous love affair with cinematic bombshell Ava Gardner led him to attempt suicide twice in less than a year.

In Sinatra in Hollywood, celebrity author Tom Santopietro delves into the crooner’s reported emotional difficulties.

In 1951, Sinatra, who was 35 at the time, married Gardner, then 29. It was the second of Sinatra’s four marriages.

According to Santopietro’s book, Sinatra cut his wrists at his pal Jimmy Van Heusen’s New York apartment in 1953, the same year they first separated.

“The author reveals that Van Heusen’s unexpected return saved the singer from bleeding to death,” a publishing insider told the National Enquirer.

“Sinatra’s first attempt at suicide had occurred a year earlier after yet another debilitating fight with Ava,” he continues. “He inhaled gas from the kitchen stove in a different friend’s apartment.”

“The book also says Ava had two abortions while they were together – without consulting Frank, saying that a sane lifestyle necessary for raising children just wasn’t possible with him. ”

In 1957, Sinatra and Gardner ultimately divorced.
