Fran Drescher recounts brutal rape during 1985 home invasion

Fran Drescher, an actress, has spoken about how her photographic memory helped police catch the man who raped her during a 1985 home invasion.

Prior to getting her legendary role on The Nanny in 1993, Drescher and a companion were raped at gunpoint, while her husband at the time, Peter Marc Jacobsen, was tied up.

“I ended up, because I have a photographic memory, helping the police do the artist sketch of what he looked like,” she revealed. “Based off of that, they were able to apprehend him.”

She claims that her assailant has now been convicted and sentenced to jail.

“I have at least the closure, which a lot of women sadly do not have,” the actress added. “But I do, that he’s locked away now for good and will never do that again and I don’t have to think I see him every time I turn a corner.”

In her book “Cancer Schmancer,” the writer and comic who rose to fame on the classic 1990s sitcom “The Nanny” previously detailed the frightening attack.

“My whole life has been about changing negatives into positives,” she wrote.

In 2019, she addressed InStyle about the impact it had on her, stating she “didn’t really get into my feelings or my vulnerabilities.”

“I never wanted to come off as weak, so I just kind of buried it and got on with life,” she explained. “For the next 15 years I focused on working extra hard, making everybody else happy and being a caregiver. I was busy with ‘The Nanny,’ and I lived in the oxygen-thin air of other people saying how hard I worked and how nice I was.”

Drescher stated her assailant was out on parole at the time of her attack and eventually earned a life sentence when speaking to CNN’s Ana Cabrera to promote her new NBC sitcom “Indebted.”

“We were held at gunpoint by a man we didn’t know along with his brother,” she says in an interview.

“He was on parole. He had been incarcerated and then he was let go and went on the rampage.

“I was not the only woman he had raped. My girlfriend was there and she was raped too while Peter was tied up and blindfolded.”

Drescher said in this week’s edition of PEOPLE that when she was raped, she felt it too difficult to inform her parents about the ordeal.

“After the rape, my friends knew, but I couldn’t even call my parents and tell them,” she stated, adding that she didn’t want to put her parents through any “additional stress.”
