Dwayne Johnson Explains Why He Pees in a Water Bottle During Workouts

Dwayne Johnson has said that nothing gets in the way of his exercises, admitting that this includes using water bottles when he needs to urinate.

Johnson, 49, spoke up about this odd workout habit, which he first exposed unintentionally in a 2017 Instagram video in which a water bottle full of translucent yellow liquid is plainly visible at one point. In the video, Johnson says, “I just realized you all just saw my big bottle of pee. Look, I go hardcore when I train. I don’t have time to go to the bathroom. I find a bottle, I pee in it, and I keep training like a beast.”

In the latest episode of Esquire’s video series, “Explain This,” the Red Notice actor discussed his exercise routine, among other things. He also revealed another strange reason for his odd habit: apparently most of the facilities he uses do not have restrooms.

“It’s not a water bottle that I’ve actually purchased solely for water that you wash and clean when you’re done using it. These are just bottles that I’m no longer using,” Johnson said. “Usually the gyms that I work out in don’t have a bathroom because they’re the iron paradise. There’s no bathroom there. They’re just hot, sweaty, and dirty.”

“I usually stay pretty hydrated; I need to go to the bathroom a lot. Not a lot, but probably a couple of times during every workout I have to go to the bathroom. So, break out the bottle.”

On social media, followers were generally perplexed by Johnson’s statement, with many questioning why the former professional wrestler can’t take a quick toilet break – or find a gym with facilities.

“Workout for strength and energy but TOO LAZY to go to the bathroom?” one user tweeted.

“God forbid he put down the dumbbell for seven minutes to use the toilet,” added another.

Someone else tweeted, “Not sure why this is a story but I’m pretty sure gyms have restrooms.”

The American Council on Exercise recommends drinking 17 to 20 ounces of water — the equivalent of 2 1/2 glasses — two to three hours before beginning exercise, 8 ounces of water 20 to 30 minutes before beginning exercise, and 7 to 10 ounces of water — or 1 1/2 glasses — for every 10 to 20 minutes of exercise, regardless of whether the exercise is mild, moderate, or intense.

We can’t disagree that staying hydrated when exercising is usually a smart idea, especially when you’re pushing yourself as hard as Johnson. As noted by SELF, your cells require water to turn foods such as fat into energy that fuels your muscles. Staying hydrated also maintains blood volume, which is necessary for the normal functioning of your cardiovascular system and the control of your body temperature. That is why you should never be dehydrated during a workout.

Johnson is well-known for chronicling his tough workouts, including videos and photographs from his almost-daily gym sessions on his Instagram feed.
