Did Biden fall asleep during meeting with Israeli PM?

A short video and snapshot from a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and US President Joe Biden are being extensively circulated on social media platforms, claiming that Biden fell asleep during his conversation with the former.

Biden was alert and engaged during his discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, according AP, which says the video isn’t accurate.

Biden and Bennett met on Friday to talk about COVID-19 and Iran’s nuclear capabilities, among other things.

Bennett is seen chatting with his mask off while Biden sits across from him in the video.

After the discussion, social media users spread false information stating that Biden slept off during the chat. Biden is seen with his head bowed and his eyes closed in a widely circulated photo. A video posted to Instagram on Aug. 28 with the description “Joe appears to fall asleep during a meeting with Israel Prime Minister Naftali Bennett” has been viewed over 130,000 times in two days.

The picture is deceptive, and the description is incorrect. Biden glances down in his lap many times during the 14-minute video shot during the meeting, including when he’s listening and reading from his notes. One of these instances is captured in the deceptive photograph, giving the appearance that Biden is not entirely alert or asleep.

The US president actually responds to the Israeli PM as soon as he finishes talking. One can also notice that Biden’s fingers are moving while Bennett speaks to him.

At 12:42 minutes, the small part isolated in the posts begins. Biden continues to talk at 13:14 minutes, but this has been edited out of the recordings that have been posted online.

It was the two men’s first face-to-face meeting since Bennett’s inauguration as Prime Minister in June.

Bennett arrived at the White House with the goal of persuading Biden not to re-enter the Iran nuclear agreement, which was negotiated during the Obama administration and then rejected by Trump.

On Aug. 28, Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colorado, tweeted the video with the comment “Wake up, Joe. You have a resignation letter to sign!”
