Demi Lovato says she was raped at 15 by a co-star on Disney Channel

Demi Lovato claims she was raped as a teenager while working for the Disney Channel in the late 2000s by someone who got no ramifications when she told her bosses about it.

Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil (available Tuesday) is a dramatic new YouTube Originals docuseries in which the pop singer, 28, talks for the first time about her experiences with sexual assault.

Lovato opens up about her battle with addiction in the series, including how she was taken to the hospital after suffering three strokes and a heart attack.

She also said that her drug dealer raped her during the overdose and “left her for dead,” and that she saw him during a one-time relapse following a stint in a treatment center in an attempt to reclaim control.

“I lost my virginity in a rape,” the 28-year-old stated. “I called that person back a month later and tried to make it right by being in control, and all it did was just make me feel worse.”

Both occasions were “textbook trauma re-enactments,” and “I really beat myself up for years,” which is also why “I had a really hard time coming to terms with the fact that it was a rape when it happened”.

“We were hooking up but I said, ‘Hey, this is not going any further. I’m a virgin and I don’t want to lose it this way.’

“And that didn’t matter to them, they did it anyway,” she went on. “And I internalised it, and I told myself it was my fault because I still went in the room with him. I still hooked up with him.”

Lovato did not name her assailant, but stated that following the incident, she “had to see this person all the time.”

Lovato further stated that she informed someone at the time, but that the perpetrator – a man – “never got taken out of the movie they were in”

She also said that the pressure she was under at the time to appear “pure” increased the stress she was under, leading to bulimia and self-harming.

“I stopped eating, and, you know, coped in other ways – cutting, throwing up, whatever,” she said.

“My bulimia got so bad that I started throwing up blood for the first time.”

Lovato claimed to have used a purity ring in 2008, when he rocketed to stardom thanks to the Disney Channel film Camp Rock. Meaghan Martin and Alyson Stoner, Jonas Brothers co-stars in the film and its 2010 sequel.

She claimed she was speaking out now because she felt “comfortable doing so,” referring to the current Me Too campaign, which encouraged people to reveal previous sexual assault and harassment.

“Women are typically more repressed than men,” she said, “especially as a little child star role model who’s supposed to be perfect, who had a promise ring!”
